Check out the Latest Makeovers from Shizzle Design’s Paint Your Own Furniture Workshop – April 2016

This post is packed full of before and after pictures along with as many of our tips and color combinations as I can remember.  Please forgive me if I jump around a bit.  My brain is a little foggy lately.  Here’s where we started…13051702_10207525028581470_6205426927575223338_n

Actually, most of the “before” pictures are in emails from our class participants but here are the first pictures I was able to capture during class.  I’ll do my best to remember which colors they used.

Laura used Twig for the base coat color on her frenchy oak table

She zipped right along and had it painted in a jiffy.  Over the brown, she choose Old Town Paint’s Burnt Orange ~ such a pretty color combo!

Diane layered Old Town’s Silver Gray over Dark Gray on her mirror.  She was working on two very small pieces so I didn’t get very good shots of the mirror.  It turned out super cool though with just a hint of the existing metallic finish popping through underneath.

This picture doesn’t show all the cool dimension of the finish, but it looked super cool in person.  She sealed APC’s Smoke Signal with Frenchic’s easy-to-use Rustic Wax.  It’s a gorgeous new dark wax offered here at Shizzle Design that is a must have.  Frenchic’s Rustic Wax has more black undertones than it does brown which lends itself to a very rich finish.

Frenchic’s Rustic Wax is also the easiest, most fool-proof, dark wax we’ve ever used.

Doug base coated his vintage book table using Old Town Paint’s Wasabi

I love green and am tickled that we now have so many new colors to choose from.  Check out our vast array of paint colors all in one spot here.

Doug painted over the Wasabi with Clean White then wet distressed the white with a damp rag revealing the green paint and the dark stain of the original finish.13055542_10207525032861577_2006979011625910130_n

Cool yeah?

Notice how the paint dries lighter than it is when it is dry.  This is typical of our chalk and clay paints; once sealed with wax, they’ll take on a deeper, more rich color.

Karen purchased a bench at a local consignment shop and started out her transformation by giving it American Paint Company’s Shingle on the Roof.  It’s a deeper brown and as of this blog post, is on clearance for 50% off the regular price so it’s a great time to stock up.  All the chalk and clay paints, finishes and other items on sale now can be found here.

Her goal was to create a whimsical finish similar to the drawers of this china cabinet.  See the entire transformation of my piece here.

Several of the colors I used on the china cabinet have since been retired she improvised by choosing APC’s Shoreline and Old Town Paint’s Leaf Green.  I started her out and then she continued the process until she liked the way it looked.

Once she was finished layering and wet distressing, she decided to tone it down a bit so she sealed the entire piece with a mix of American Paint Company’s Clear and Dark Waxes.

Jeanette learned how to create the funky finish I created on this highboy.

To start this look, Diane painted her base coat using two colors instead of one.  The colors were applied randomly, with no particular pattern, slapping on teal and orange in whichever way she wanted.

I’m not sure which orange she used.  She brought that from home leftover from an earlier project.  It may be APC’s Shag Carpet (on clearance now) or Old Town’s Burnt Orange.  She layered the orange with Frenchic’s Anguilla (that’s the teal you’re seeing below).

Once the funky color combination had dried, she layered on a coat of American Paint Company’s beautifully rich Firework’s Red.

Diane did great wet distressing the read to reveal the colors underneath.  She was still finessing this piece when she left so I don’t have a finished picture to show you.  Keep in mind that the finish will be richer in color once it is sealed.  In the next two pictures, she still hasn’t finished wet distressing and no wax has been applied at this point.

13055581_10207525030101508_4926152155227699863_n

I can’t wait to see this piece after it’s waxed!  It will really deepen these colors!  I think she chose Clear Wax to seal this piece but it would also look fantastic sealed in Dark Wax!

It was so much fun seeing everyone’s transformations unfold.  Great group, Great fun!
