I love this Cool Vintage Wooden Chair!

Several years ago, my Aunt Katie dug an old wooden chair out of her barn and brought to me so I could refinish it as an outdoor garden chair.  I was selling them at the time and she thought it would make a good garden planter.
I was like “what?”  I was like “huh?”  This one ain’t (sorry Mrs. Lyndrup) going into the garden!  We have the perfect spot for it in our living room, right next to the fireplace.

I stacked it carefully among the other million chairs in our garage until a few weeks ago.

Then I began to strip, and strip, and STRIP layer after layer after LAYER of wax and oils and whatever it builds up on wood furniture over time.

I used messy, gooey stripping gel twice then worked my way down to a gazillion pads of steel wool and mineral spirits (there’s got to be an easier way!).  (There actually is, check out my post on stripping)

FINALLY the beautiful wood underneath was exposed.

I don’t know what kind of wood it is, but it’s GORGEOUS!  I wanted it to resemble Koa so I stained it with a reddish brown stain. Wipe on, wipe off – I don’t even have any finish on it yet in these pictures!  Oh my gosh!  I LOVE this chair!

So this is my dilemma – what’s the best way to upholster this?  I spent my entire life watching dad do this for a living so my standards are high, but my upholstery skills… not so much!

The seat must have some kind of weaving across the bottom because there were a gazillion staples holes around the chair.  I made a pattern on a sheet of paper so I can cut a piece of wood, but I’m not really sure where to go from there.

I’d love to hear your suggestions!  Click on the comment da’kine below.

  1. That chair is so awesome. It reminds me of a ram! (wink) I have not a clue on what to tell you as far as the chair bottom. I wish I did. The only thing that comes to mind is using 1X1’s screwed into the inside to where the wood you cut lays on them even with the sides then screw screws in from underneath so the screws do not show. Maybe a pretty pillow cushion??? Or you can sand and sand until you get those neat little dips on the top….you know one for each cheek! ha ha Then stain it and leave it! It is so pretty! Good luck I can’t wait to see the end results!

  2. Shelly…I LOVE the chair! Think I would go with some funky fabric…not traditional since the chair is already kinda that…BTW, have we had the Hawaii discussion? We just moved from there and all of your local-isms make me miss it more! Hope you’re having an awesome Monday! Hugs, Kennesha

  3. i also think that chair si awesome!!!! the shape is killer!
for the seat, i would create a template and cut out a plywood seat… then just add foam and fabric to that, and staple it on- it looks like you could add screws to the front portion of the chiar to screw the seat on?

  4. That chair is so darn gorgeous. I love all the chair in your garage! I want you to come and help me organize mine! I would make a simple seat, I think if you go to busy on the fabric, it will detract from the beauty of the wood. Just my two cents, (not that it is worth much….) Happy Thanksgiving!
