I have a tendency to mess around with things. I can’t make it from point “A” to point “B” without taking a detour. This holds true for many areas of my life so it makes perfect sense that it would transfer over to my style of painting.
Enter Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I discovered this fabulous paint over the summer and have been messing around with it ever since – literally.
I bust open my cans then mix up several colors of paint along with different color washes. I layer paint and wax until I’ve created a rich old world patina.
I don’t always know what look I’m going for until I see it. I just keep layering until I’m happy with the results. A lot of people think I’m crazy for spending so much time on my pieces, but I’d rather spend a little more time to do something unique than follow the beaten path.
I created the finish on this round coffee table using Versailles, Paris Grey, Graphite, Old White as well as clear and dark wax. It was a major labor of love, this look didn’t come easy for me, but after days upon days of hard work, I’m happy with the look.

I love your creativity! I’m not as brave as you with paint colors and am afraid I’d end up with something that resembled mud, instead of “old world”.
I still haven’t tried Annie Sloan and keep hoping I’ll win a giveaway for it!

My favorite? All of them! Although the Walnut topped Parlor table, the first piece you did, and the red chest of drawers with cute legs. Wow, you have been a busy, busy girl. Oh yes, and the leather finish looking chest. Can I just come live in your workshop and soak up some inspiration? Amazing, all of it.

I think you’ve all answered my question,but I am a beginner to AS chalk paint. You can layer the paint over her wax? I’m afraid to commit to a color,then wax top coat. Would love the option of changing my mind!

Yay! I would love to know how you achieved the amazing look for top of table – what combo did you use? I love the depth and richness you created. I keep trying on a practice board but not getting right. If you could share a little of how you got there it would be great!!Love your work!
Hi Shelly. I too am LOVING this table, especially what you did with the top! I am just starting to experiment with AS chalk paint and I love it! I recently purchased a beautiful French Country Dining table to refinish. I am very happy with the legs which I layered with a wash of old white over two coats of paris grey, then finished with some clear and dark wax. My dilemma is that my table top is not the hard wood I had hoped it was, but made of a nice veneer. I thought I would be able to sand down the edges then stain with a nice walnut finish. The edges are scratched and chipped and in need of repair, but no matter how much I sand I am not getting to the nice wood…I don’t think it exists. I didn’t want to paint the top, but feel like I have to now….. This tabletop is the one and ONLY painted top that I have seen that I know I would LOVE!~ Do you have any tips for me? Thank you. I love your work!! Inspiring!!

I too am so happy I came across your blog. You are indeed inspiring and God has truly gifted you with an incredible talent. I am a newbee! I took a class with Ashley in Wisconsin at Confectionaire. I’m lacking confidence in mixing colors. I have collected at least 35 pieces of furniture. One in particular is an incredible dining table and 4 chairs. I loved your old world patina technique. Absolutely what I’m looking for for this set. Is there a way I can bring my table in for one of your classes? I would love to create this look for my table. I live in the southwest part of Wisconsin…Ferryville:) Sharon
Hi Sharon, this table is something that I probably spent three weeks doing. I used to really struggle with ASCP, especially with her dark wax so I had to keep doing and re-doing pieces to get them to come out right. It would be hard to teach this type of layering in a five hour workshop even on a small end table which is pretty much the size of furniture allowed. I could show you the basic idea on a smaller piece and then you could take that knowledge home and apply it to your larger pieces.
I would love to apply this old world patina look to some old furniture I have picked up. I plan on attending your workshop and if you have the time, I would like some ideas on pictures of furniture I have acquired over the course of 6 months. I’ve really got to get busy:) It was refreshing to see your storage looking like mine!
This particular table was a nightmare and took forever to get it straightened out but a lot of it was due to the products I was using at the time. To get this type of look, it still takes a lot more time and layering than your average piece. I’ll try to help you out if there’s time after class. We’re hoping CeCe will stay a little longer afterwards for a Meet & Greet.
