Here’s another really cool vintage table that was painted by one of the gals at our Shizzle Workshop taught at Michigan State University.
Leslie brought in a table she had picked up at the MSU Surplus Store.
When she found it, the top was in need of some TLC. I believe she stripped off the veneer first but after filling in spots with wood putty, the top still had a lot of funky variations to it, and not in a way you’d want to accentuate. I recommended she give the top a quick coat of clear shellac, sealing the top and providing a clean slate which wouldn’t show all the previous repairs.
Leslie painted this in a rich combination of CeCe Calwell’s Vermont Slate and Seattle Mist.
The detail on this piece is just scrumptious!
Leslie layered the two colors back and forth until she ended up with subtle variations
then she wet distressed here piece like I show in my video here

Love this paint treatment on the vintage table. I have purchased some CCC paint but haven’t used it on a piece yet. When you say that the two colors were layered “back and forth” do you mean that each color was layered back and forth on their respective parts of the table…like Seattle Mist layered back and forth on the top, and Vermont Slate layered back and forth on the rest of the table? Or did you mean that SM was layered along with VS on the bottom to get the dimensional effect?? If you don’t get a chance to reply back, no problem, but know that I always look forward to your posts—-very inspirational:)
Hi Allison, what I mean by that is that she painted the entire base of the table in Vermont, came back over that when it was try and started dry brushing it in Seattle. It was a little too much contrast so she then dry brushed some Vermont Slate back over that until she got the look she was going for. The rest was softened by wet distressing.
