Summer in Michigan is all about quality time spent with family and friends. We were at the lake last month and hit
a flea market up north.
One of my husband’s friend is an exceptional chef. In this picture, he’s doing a shrimp boil for everyone ~ yum!!
Tom is also a pro at wheeling and dealing with people at the swap meets. The four of us got up early on the 4th and headed out to a local flea market. I feel uncomfortable negotiating prices but Tom is a natural at it. He had me practically rolling on the ground a couple of times, especially if Kathe gets in on the conversation. I’ve vowed to never go to another flea market again without them.
One of the items they helped me score is this console table. It already was solid and had great bones, just needed a little pizzazz!
Everyone’s been on my case about never painting black, what can I say, black furniture is not my thing but I bit the bullet anyway and gave it my best shot.
This piece was filthy so I gave it a good cleaning. I highly recommend APC’s all natural Surface Prep and Brush Cleaner for cleaning furniture and brushes. This stuff is the bomb! The bottle is concentrated so it goes a long way without taking up valuable space in your cabinet and makes cleaning much easier.
To create this look, I slapped on a quick, sloppy coat of American Paint Company’s Beach Glass. This serves as the base color which will peek through the black.
Shizzle Tip – After the teal dried, I noticed three different spots. You can’t really see them here but something had spilled on it at some point in time. Not to worry – I simply slapped on two quick coats of Zinnser’s Clear Shellac to block the spots and eliminate future bleed-through. I prefer to use the liquid form which comes in quarts and gallons but it’s also available in a spray can which is super convenient.
Shellac must be completely dry before applying any more paint.
I painted it with APC’s black called Lincoln’s Hat. (update, Lincoln’s Hat has been retired and replaced with Cannonball, an even darker black).
It looked nice but you know me, it was just killing me to see an entire piece of furniture in one solid color, so I grabbed a damp rag and my handy dandy mouse sander and went to town.
I’m a huge advocate for wet sanding, but in this case, I wanted to rip some of the finish back to the original wood grain (hence the sander).
Here’s what I ended up with.
By the time you read this post, we will have dropped this off to our Shizzle Design space within Not So Shabby in Holland, Michigan.
Here’s the Recipe I used on this piece:
American Paint Company’s ~ Beach Glass
American Paint Company’s ~ Lincoln’s Hat, since retired. Use Cannonball
American Paint Company’s ~ Dark Aging Wax

The mouse sander you mentioned is that a smaller electric sander than a basic orbital? I need something that can get in smaller areas besides just doing it my hand. Another masterpiece with this table:)
Thanks for always sharing!
Hi Gina, no ~ it’s not an orbital sander, it just vibrates. It’s shaped more like the body of a mouse. I like the pointed tip that gets into corners… I also like to find ones that are small enough for my hands as most tools are made for guys.
Thank you. I think I have seen the kind your talking about:)
Love this look!! Great job!
Thanks Sherri!
I agree it was time for a black piece and, as always, you exceeded my expectations. Simply beautiful! I love that you brought out so much of the wood grain.
Thanks Paula ~ yes, I’ve never been a fan of black furniture or black leather ~ what can I say. I had to break it up a little otherwise it would have looked factory finished and too new. I’m all about character ~ reflects my old beat up self, lol
Shoot- lost my comment. Anyway- You did a tremendous job on that piece and underpinning with that deep aqua color was brilliant. I LOVE how it came through-it just makes the piece!!! xo Diana
Thanks Diana!!
Just fabulous!
Thanks Susan!!
Thanks Susan!
Beautiful makeover! I love the color! Thanks for sharing your technique. I have never heard of “wet sanding” What is different about that?
Thanks Laurie, I have video tutorials on how to wet distress with a damp rag here: http://shizzle-design.com/portfolio/home-decor
Thank you!
Your welcome Laurie!!
What more can I add, it looks wonderful. Though I’m the opposite, I love black pieces. I painted a small dresser with the destin gulf and uses Beckley coal for accent.
I bet it’s awesome Nina!!
Thanks Nina!! I bet your piece is AWEsome!!
Oh the texture! Oh the layers. This one caught my eye right away!!
Thanks Taylor!
I LOVE the base-coat showing through! Looks awesome! Thanks for the link on wet sanding. I need to try that!
Thanks Gwen!!
This is gorgeous! The table had such pretty lines to begin with but your painting technique brought it so much life! Love the turquoise with the black and how it peeks through and that sheen is stunning! Outstanding! Hugs, Leena
Thanks Leena!!
Shelly, this is beautiful! I love the blue under the black. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing at Silver Pennies Sundays! x
Thanks Danielle!
Saw your add on CL. What are the dimensions of the console table? Is this item still for sale? Can you send me a picture of the top?
I’m not sure Kevin, someone else contacted me last night who was very interested in it and was planning to call the store first thing this morning (I work out of my garage). She has to drive in from out of town and may have placed a 24 hour HOLD TAG on it. If that’s the case, you can always put a back-up HOLD TAG on it with your name on it in case she decides not to purchase it. I think it’s 52-54″ wide and 14-15″ deep. My booth is right behind the cash register so they’ll be able to tell you if it sold or is on hold this morning. Not So Shabby’s number is 616.796.6980. If you have any other questions, you can contact me through the contact button above. Thanks ~ Shelly
Hi my name is Dorothy I love the beach glass where can I buy those colors, and what is TSP.
Hi Dorothy, We carry Beach Glass. You can pick it up at Shizzle Designs located here: http://shizzle-design.com/welcome or order it from our Online Shizzle Shop at: http://shizzle-design.com/store. TSP is a de-greaser; I use it in powder form, comes in a small box like Cascade would. You can find it at any Home Depot, hardware store… in the paint department near the strippers.
