The Cancer is Gone, My Arm has been Rebuilt, now the Long Road to Recovery

Words cannot express the overwhelming gratitude I have for all the friends and family who’ve come along side the girls and I since I was diagnosed with cancer.  From my primary doctor, Kristi Kern, to my orthopedic oncology surgeon, Dr. Joel Post, I’ve had nothing but exceptional care.

Chondrosarcoma is an extremely rare form of bone cancer.  Most oncologists will NOT experience a case of it in their entire career.  Because of its rare qualities, it often gets missed until it’s in a more advanced stage.  God was watching over me that day because Dr. Kern spotted my tumor within minutes of my walking into her office.  She didn’t know exactly what we were in store for, but she immediately ordered MRIs for my arm and shoulder and a CT scan for my chest.  Chondrosarcoma typically doesn’t spread but if it does, it typically will metastasize to the lungs.

I went in complaining of pain in my shoulder-blade and 20 minutes later she discovered the tumor in my bone.

The heartfelt prayer by my close friend Kami meant the world to me the morning we arrived at the Lemmon-Holton Cancer Pavilion in Grand Rapids.  She’s dealt with the ultimate sacrifice of burying her own child so to have her stand along side me and give so effortlessly is a true Godsend.

The list of friends who’ve come along our side is endless from the Veldhouse ohana who so graciously mowed our lawn to the Curtis / Kok / Koster & Kosters families who showed up as the “Molly Maid” team to clean the house.  Alicia and Sue who washed our windows, Laurie Popma who has been driving Kekai back from practice and meets on a daily basis.  We’ve had meals dropped off from people at church and endless prayer warriors praying us through.  My mom, sister and daughters continue to fill in the gaps with in every other way and I also have friends helping me with everything from paperwork to coordinating other types of help we’ll need as the leaves begin to drop…  Thank you!!!

It’s been a long, challenging year of unwelcome changes here at the Andrade house.  My daughters and I took a pretty good hit early this year and we’ve worked hard to push through the pain and disappointment that this betrayal continues to bring to our  family.

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger right?  Well, it must be true because when the doctor called to tell me I had a very rare form of bone cancer, it barely phased me.  My having cancer pales in comparison to hearing the gut wrenching pain that my daughter’s going through after having her heart-broken by a man she once called dad.  There’s nothing worse than seeing your kids hurt and it’s going to take the Grace of God for me to forgive him for his poor choices.

Cathy shot this video shortly after they did the nerve block.  It didn’t take long for my arm to go completely numb at which point she took full advantage to shoot a video.  I must have had some kind of happy juice too at this point.   I remember everything suddenly made me giggle, especially that goofy paper hospital gown that pumped hot air ~ all around me to keep my body at a warmer temperature.

Almost two weeks out of surgery now. I’m slowly improving but am still in a lot of pain. It makes sense when you consider how much of my bone had to be removed from my arm. Taking pain meds every two hours 24/7 has zapped my energy. It’s almost impossible to get any real zzzz’s when I can’t sleep longer than two hours at any given stretch. To top it off, the constipation these stupid drugs cause is horrific. I’m not kidding! I’m weaning off one of the pain meds this week but it’s been a challenge. Basically, the past two weeks have been hell. I do my best to put a smile on for everyone to hide my pain and keep praying for the best. I have the most incredible friends and family standing by my side and helping with everything the girls and I need. The kids themselves had been such a God send; such troopers! We are incredibly blessed by all of you!! Monday morning (9/28) I find out if any higher grade of cancer was found during the thorough pathology report so prayers for a great outcome are definitely appreciated on that. That’s that last scary immediate hurdle. I should be able to start physical therapy at some point down the road so I can begin my road to recovery. I will however have to get scans every three months for the rest of my life. Pray that I’ll find the means to do so and that they continue to come back clean. .

Yes, this is my mom and sister making fun of me… and below are a few of the x-ray shots of my new arm.  Just call me bionic or a super hero or something…

That’s all for now.  Cathy is the smarty pants who taped Mc Dreamy to my board.  Of course all the surgeons, oncologists, anesthesiologist, nurses, techs… saw it but there was nothing I could do.  The nurse put an alarm on my bed so I couldn’t escape without their help.  Yes, I was busted the first night trying to run to the bathroom, IV’s, drainage tubes… intact because I needed to puke and the nurse call button was on the floor.  What’s a girl to do?

chondrosarcoma shelly andrade right humerus 5

By the way, the cool sox I’m wearing are compliments of my friend Ann Schneider from The Front Porch in Waukesha, WI.  She has the coolest sox and rumor has it (they keep the naughty ones behind the counter 🙂 just sayin!)

Signing off for now.  It took me a week and a half to get this written.  Visit out Facebook Page ShizzleLLC for more frequent updates and hopefully, I’ll one day be able to paint again.  For now, I’m just thankful to be alive.

Thank you for your Prayers…

Our Jenison Shizzle Shop will be closed Wednesday, August 19 as my family and I meet a team of doctors at Spectrum Health’s Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion.Shizzle Design Free Paint Demo Best classes Largest selection of chalk clay paints in grand rapids michigan

At this point, I’m not sure what the future holds for me.  They haven’t determined yet if the large bony lesion inside my humerus is malignant or not.  My primary referred me to The Soft Tissue Mass & Sarcoma Multi-Specialty Team at Spectrum Hospital and that’s scary enough.

I’ve had several tests so far including X-rays of my shoulder, which is where I’ve experienced so much pain.  Even though they were imaging my shoulder, part of my arm ended up on the picture.  That’s how they discovered the lesion in the first place.

I’ve also had an MRI w/ contrast  of my arm followed by a CT scan of my chest.   Sarcoma is prone to going to the lungs.  My lungs feel good right now.  I’m very aware of my breathing as I’ve had lots of problems in the past, but they seem good now.

All results, including the CT of my chest done yesterday, should be in by the time we meet Wednesday morning (8/19/15).

The team of several oncology specialists, radiologists, a nurse advocate all work together to provide the best possible care.  They’ll explain what they’re thinking and then a biopsy will most likely be ordered.  From what I’ve read, it can be very difficult to tell if this type of tumor is cancer or not without actually getting a piece of it.

I am so very thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers coming in from so many of you the past several months.

It’s been a tough year.  My marriage has been fallen apart and the girls and I are doing everything we can to heal from it.  The process of divorce, along with all the emotional and additional expenses are taking a toll.  Guess God thought we could endure a little bit more.  Two major repairs on my truck and now this?  Cancer ~ Seriously?

Whimisical Patchwork Style Paint Technique with American Paint Company Paints

Today I’m revisiting one of our most popular posts written a couple years ago.  I love painting this whimsical patchwork style and on this cold, dreary, SNOWY April day, I needed a little whimsy to brighten my spirits.  Hoping for warmer days ahead this summer.  Enjoy!!

Do you ever have one of  THOSE days?  THOSE weeks?  THOSE months?  I do!  Sometimes I just need to walk away from everything and escape the chaos for a little while.  This is one of our favorite places to relax.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park

I love Michigan’s summers!  Since it’s light until almost 10:00 p.m. this time of year, late afternoons and evenings the perfect time for painting.  The sun isn’t intense, the winds are usually calm and everything seems more tranquil.

DSC_1168

I took the opportunity to slap together a quick makeover using various leftover sample pots of American Paint Company’s chalk, clay and mineral paint.  I dumped blobs of each color onto a plate and went to town.  No deep thought, no planning ~ Ready, Set, GO!

The only thing I knew I wanted was a chunky, patchwork quilt type of colorful finish.  I used American Paint Company’s Beach Glass, Orange Grove, Amber Waves of Grain, Home Turf, Dessert Cactus (a couple of these have since been retired and are on sale now here).  Here’s what I ended up with.

Patchwork #painteddresser Shizzle Design Grand Rapids, Michigan chalk clay paints #paintedfurniture best colors ideas #americanpaintcompany 12

To begin, I simply slapped on the paint and kept layering… and layering… and layering!

This dresser is a good representation of what’s going through my brain at any given moment.

To me, it’s not just about the color, it’s how a piece feels

I wish you could reach through your monitor and feel how silky smooth the finish is on this piece.  It’s sealed with American Paint Company’s Light Antiquing Wax (retired, we have one can left on 4.22.15) which adds a sunset-like warmth to the vast array of colors I used.

Patchwork #painteddresser Shizzle Design Grand Rapids, Michigan chalk clay paints #paintedfurniture best colors ideas 2

I love APC’s Antiquing Waxes!

APC’s waxes are pre-mixed so…

  • You don’t have to mix it up yourself and worry whether you have it mixed well enough to cure properly.
  • You don’t have to fart around cutting the dark wax with clear wax just to make it glide on evenly.  It naturally spreads out evenly without creating streaks you can’t blend into the finish.
  • You also won’t have to dilute it with Mineral Spirits like some chemically laden waxes require to make them work properly ~ just brush it on like you would Clear Wax and buff with an old t-shirt and you’ll end up with such a buttery smooth finish that you won’t be able to stop touching it.

Light Antiquing Wax #shizzledesign #americanpaintcompany

Ok, maybe that’s just me

I touch a lot of painted furniture that doesn’t FEEL good

To create this look, take a variety of colors and start slapping it on in random patterns.  Dry brush in every which way then use a little water to spread it around and repeat over and over again until you like what you see.  I used a variety of colors from American Paint Company’s chalk/clay/mineral paints including: Fireworks Red, Home Turf, Surfboard, Orange Grove, Wild Horses, Home Plate, Beach Glass, Coral Reef and whatever else was within my reach that day.

Patchwork #painteddresser Shizzle Design Grand Rapids, Michigan chalk clay paints #paintedfurniture best colors ideas #americanpaintcompany 10

I do the same thing with carpet, couches, sweatshirts and linens.  Living room carpet needs to be soft enough to lay on, the fabric on a couch needs to be so comfy that you can crash face first into it…  Yes, I’ve been known to lay on couches at LaZboy and I’m about as experienced as they come at picking out the best rocking chair.  Ok ~ so I like to rock.  One of these days I’ll share some of my earliest photos of this habit that I seem to have carried on to adulthood.  Did I mention, I still rock my 10 year old?  SHHHH ~ don’t tell her I told you!!

These colors lift my spirits!

I was six years old when the original version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory arrived at Studio 28 but I’ll never forget how awestruck I was when they opened the doors to the Chocolate Room.  You know the room I’m talking about, that magical room where everything is edible, trees of taffy, shrubs that sprout lollipops, edible tea cups and that chocolate river where the chocolate is mixed by waterfall.  Are you with me?

For the past week, I’ve felt  like I was walking into that whimsical room, all over again.    Truth be told, I’m not even a big fan of chocolate, so I’m guessing it’s the color that drives my senses into overdrive.  Tell me I’m not the only one that has this happen 🙂

————————————————————————

Not only are the colors beautiful, what really stole our hearts about this paint was how silky smooth it is.  This paint is amazing!  I can’t stop touching it!

Did I mention I love this paint?

  • Silky & Smooth ~ It has the nicest, most silky smooth, matte finish ever!  I can’t walk past a finished piece of furniture without gliding my hands across the finish.  I know, sign me up for therapy.  I twirl hair and I walk around touching furniture ~ what can I say?

Old Town Paints Shizzle Design smooth american paint company chalk paint retailer grand rapids michigan best colors chart annie sloan cece caldwell american paint company painted furniture largest selection 2

It’s important to me that my painted pieces not only look good, they have to feel good.  There’s a ton of painted furniture on the market today, but nothing throws me off more than a pretty piece that feels rough and chalky.  The feel of my finished pieces is just as important as how they look.

  • Super Easy to Use & Very versatile ~ Old Town Chalk Style Finish Paint was created to be used in a variety of ways on many surfaces.  Dilute it with water to create a color wash or dye for fabric.  Dilute it just a touch and you’ll achieve the smoothest finish ever or slather it on thick using sloppy, chunky, pouncing brush strokes to create texture.

  • Customize ~ Mix any color Old Town Paint into their finishing products and create your custom tinted finishes to achieve the exact look you want.

  • Durable ~ OTP Chalk Style Finish Paint absorbs their high grade finishing products easily for maximum protection and durability and the selection of finishes is incredible.
  • Skip the Primer!  One of the bonuses is its superior adhesion!  There’s no need to prime or sand surfaces prior to painting because it adheres to most surfaces. There may, on occasion, be that one nightmare piece that defies this rule, but in general, you won’t need to take the extra steps.  If in doubt, give it a scuff sand.  It’s always better to lean on the side of caution but I’ve had no problems with this paint not adhering, it is awesome!

  • Made in the U.S.A. ~ yeah baby, that’s what I’m talking about!  This paint comes from the great state of California which sets the bar for producing eco-friendly products.
  • Eco Friendly

With weakened immune systems, it’s very important to Cathy and I that we offer the best products on the market, not only in the beauty and functionality of the paint, but also in how safe they are for both our customers and the environment.

Cathy and I spent the past six months researching over 35 of the newest paints on the market.  We’ve learned a ton and it horrifies me to learn how many companys still use ammonia, anti-freeze, formaldehyde or toxic chemicals in their paints & finishes.  The lack of regulation for what paint companys legally have to reveal is unacceptable ~ just sayin!

Old Town Paints doesn’t cut corners to save a buck.  Based out of California, they already are held to some of the strictest of laws but they go way above and beyond by choosing only the purest of ingredients for all their products.  The paint is better, the consistency is spot on and we, as painters, don’t have to worry about long-term health effects today or later down the road.

Old Town Paints Chalky Style Paint Finishes are:

  • Non-Toxic
  • No VOC’s
  • No Polymers
  • Eco Friendly
  • Solvent Free Paint
  • No Acrylic
  • No Latex
  • No Fungicide
  • Formaldehyde Free
  • APEO Free

Our finishes just arrived the other day.  There are so many different options to choose from, I’ll need to write a separate post them.  Maybe I can do that next week while I sit downtown in Jury Duty.

Black Lacquer Buffet gets a Whole New Look with Tarnished Platter Blue Gray, White Glaze & White Wax

We seldom have time for custom work anymore but I made an exception recently for a client who originally had purchased one of the other buffets I had painted.   After she sent me the picture of what she was looking for, I realized what would work better was a piece with more ornate details.  With that look in mind, we started searching for the perfect piece.  She found what she was looking for at Fabulous Finds in Middleville, Michigan.

Here’s what it looked like when it was delivered to our shop.

black lacquer buffet sideboard before

I know, I know ~ some of you may like furniture sprayed with black lacquer.  Me ~ not so much.  Thank goodness we all can choose or this world would be pretty boring.  Look away if you’re a big fan of lacquer, ‘cuz it’s about to disappear.

I hauled out my mouse sander to scuff this piece up a bit prior to painting.  Did I have to ~ probably not, but I prefer to lean on the side of caution.  A quick scuffing only took a couple minutes and gave the new paint a little more to bite into.

To recreate the look of the piece in her picture, I started with white using Navajo White by American Paint Company.  I busted out my spray gun for this project.  That saved a ton of time on, especially on the chunky ornate legs.

1920278_10204535602247680_940473624680108203_n

Base Coat of Navajo White

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan supplies 3

I sprayed over that with a coat of American Paint Company’s new Limited Edition color called Tarnished Platter.  It’s a pretty, gray/blue color, deeper than Dollar Bill.

Paint Drying after being Sprayed

560249_10204535602127677_8664825507872890242_n

It looks funny in the picture because it’s half wet, half dry.  American Paint Company Paint colors dry lighter than they look when they’re wet.  Once dried, I went to town distressing the buffet to reveal some of the white paint underneath.

Distressing

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan supplies 2

I used sand paper and a damp rag creating different types of distressing.  I love how a damp rag not only distresses through the layers, but how smooth it feels afterwards.  I can really get lost in this process.

Distresssed before any finishes are added

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan supplies wet distress 2

During the creative process, I do a little ~ step back ~ check it out ~ do a little more ~ repeat…  Cath was in Florida at the time so I could only work on it when I wasn’t swamped in the store so I probably spent more than a week just doing this.  Because I was doing this piece for someone else, I wanted to make sure I didn’t distress too much so I shared pictures with my client each step of the way.

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan supplies wet distress 3

Can I just say, it wasn’t working for me at this point?  What I mean is, it lacked the character I wanted to achieve.   I wanted to present Jami with a couple differenet options of how to finish it but I really wanted her to be there when I did it so she could tell me yah or nay.

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan white wash glaze wax

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan white wash glaze wax 4

We decided to go with a white glaze and a white wax.  I applied a slip coat of Top Coat to the entire piece prior to glazing.  By doing this, it allows more working time while glazing and prevents any one area from grabbing onto the glaze.  Do you have to do this?  No, but it helps with American Paint Company Paints because it’s so porous and absorbent.

Slip Coat of American Paint Company’s Top Coat

Tarnished Platter American Paint Company Shizzle Design gray blue buffet sideboard chalk painted furniture ideas Michigan supplies top coat during

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a waxed finish so I was excited to share the glazing and waxing with Jami.  I mixed a little bit of Navajo White Paint into APC’s Clear Glaze and started brushing it on the surface.  On parts I used my brush, on others I used a rag and simply wiped on and wiped off.

Adding the White Glaze

The glaze isn’t a sufficient finish to seal and protect a piece such as this so I sealed over this with a custom mixed white wax.

You can see in the picture below where I’ve started buffing the lower areas.  See the difference in the sheen? I give all the credit to my drill buffing brush.  It does a fantastic job of buffing and takes the strain off my hands.

It was so fun working with Jami.  She was so appreciative of everything which made the project a lot of fun.  Just this morning, she sent me a picture of it all set up in her entryway.  Thanks again Jami!  Enjoy!!

Little Red Vintage Dresser

Sharing a quick blog post on a little red dresser that I started almost a year ago.  I finally pulled it off the back burner to finish it.  I chose American Paint Company’s Firework’s Red for this antique piece using random brush strokes to build texture.

Yes, I literally finished this one in the office.

I mixed up a custom glaze using brown and black to accentuate the texture and deepen the color.

I love the color of the glass drawer pulls.  I’ve always love this color gemstone too.

I rolled her on off to our Not So Shabby location in Holland, Michigan where she’s looking for a new owner.

Broyhill Saga Premier Mid Century Modern Highboy & Dresser Updated in White and Java Gel Stain

Last summer, we acquired several pieces of Mid Century Modern pieces of furniture.  I have to tell you, it’s not my taste, so I was really stumped on what to do with them.  They sat in our workshop waiting for their turn and I finally decided to knock them out and get them out of our shop.

I have to be honest, it’s very difficult for me to work on pieces when I don’t like the style.  MCM is something that is usually painted a solid color so distressing was not an option.  How fun is that?   The lines are also very straight with very little detail, so it was pretty much torture for me but I plugged away and did my take on that era.

I started painting the base of the dressers in white but the original finish was leaching through turning everything orange so I stopped and gave each piece two good coats of shellac then painted them Navajo White.  The asymmetry of the drawers drove me bonkers since half had a divider and half did not so I decided to paint the drawers on the right white as well.

I stained the drawers with stars with rich Java stain

I primed and painted the drawer pulls with a rich metallic.

These were sealed with two coats of American Paint Company’s Top Coat.  I did four coats on the tops for added protection.  It’s so easy to apply using a sponge; my sister Cathy likes to use rags.  It’s really easy no matter how you apply it, just drippy.  Be sure to have a drop cloth underneath if you’re painting in the house.

Ironically, I had one other piece of Mid Century Modern furniture dropped off at the same time.

This little blue nightstand disappeared immediately so apparently some people really get into this era.

Peacock blue mid century modern side table painted furniture ideas chalk paint shizzle design michigan

This was painted with Peacock blue, glazed with black glaze and then sealed with American Paint Company’s Hard Coat.  I brushed my glaze on with our Viniquities paint brushes.  It does such a nice job at feathering it out and for this piece, I wanted to replicate more of a wood grain look with the glaze.

For the Hard Coat, I prefer to use a sponge or lambs wool.  I’ve been able to create beautiful finishes doing it this way.  When I try to brush it on, it dries too fast for me and I end up overworking it, then I brush over an area that’s half dry and I pull it…  So much easier and faster just to use a sponge, at least it is for me.

Kalei took both pieces to Not So Shabby on his day off where they’re eagerly waiting their new owner.

Sorry about the lame pictures.  It’s been dark and dreary and cold and stormy the past month.  So looking forward to nicer weather.

So what do you think?  Is MCM your style?
