Antique Double Bow Front Dresser & Highboy Chest

Earlier this summer I was fortunate to come across two beautiful French Provincial pieces by Dixie ~ a single highboy chest and matching double bow front dresser with mirror. I must not have shot a before of the long one but I did snap a picture of this earlier this summer.

I absolutely love the style and curves of these pieces and these classy older pieces are so well built.

I started out with an idea in mind but halfway through my layering, I put the drawers back in and though ~ hmm, that doesn’t look too bad. I thought to my self, “self, maybe I should just stop and go with this”

I debated over it for a few days but the clean crisp contrast without any distressing just about took me over the edge.

You see, I’ve never been one to fall to peer pressure. I really don’t care if other people think I should be painting every style out there. I am who I am and if I don’t like it, I have a hard time putting my name on it. What can I say?

The base of the cabinet was already coated in American Paint Company’s Freedom Road but I wanted to lighten it up. To do that, I mixed up a creamy color using mostly APC’s Home Plate with a smidgen of Rushmore and Heaven’t Light. I did a somewhat elegant distressing on these pieces to give them a custom feel without distracting from the elegant lines. Now that’s more like it!

The drawers were painted in APC’s Rushmore. To add a little more depth and dimension, I pounced some American Grit, a fine gray powder by American Paint Company, into the wet wax. We carry American Grit both in our Shizzle Design location as well as on our Online Shizzle Shop.

I love the original hardware ~ it gets me every time!

I used my favorite Dark Vintage Antiquing Wax by American Paint Company to finish the top of the dresser. I can’t get enough of this wax over dark paint ~ the look is absolutely DELISH!! It almost reminds me of a Venetian Bronze and had the most beautiful color and finish.

Little Girl’s White Princess Bed

Hi guys! Last week, I posted about several projects I hadn’t had a chance to write about and asked you all which one you’d like to see first. Well, this little gal won the survey so, as promised… here’s the story behind the little girl’s dream bed.

Sometimes in life you find yourself at the right place at the right time. That happened to me recently when I stumbled upon this beautiful antique princess bed.

The previous owners were literally packing up and moving the day I found out about it and as luck would have it, I ended up with a pretty good deal.

I was immediately drawn to the beautiful curves and details having never seen anything quite like it before. It was white when I bought it but it had the worst sprayed finish I had ever seen on a piece of furniture.

I don’t know what they painted it with but it was bumpy, rough and horrible to the touch. It almost felt like course sand paper.

I sanded and sanded and SANDED to smooth it all down. I think it was made out of diamonds, well…. ok, not that tough but it was a serious chore to sand down whatever they sprayed on it. It’s not like I could take a belt sander and go to town because there are way too many curves and detailed wood pieces so I used a combination of my orbital sander, mouse sander and then did everything else by hand.

Speaking of details, one of the trim pieces was missing on the headboard (you can see it in the first picture). I can’t believe I didn’t notice it when I picked it up ~ ugh… now what? If it was in a more discrete place, I could remove the molding on the opposite side but this was a large piece on the headboard.

I could see the outline from the original piece so using wood fill with with my fingers, an old screwdriver and a nut pick, I re-built the missing piece. After several rounds of fine-tuning, I was it pretty close. I only have one picture of it during the repair because my fingers will covered in goo, but I basically did it like you would with silly putty or Play dough.

It’s not perfect by any means, but it will fade away by the time it’s draped with pretty linens, pillows and stuff animals ~ you probably won’t even notice it.

I painted everything with two coats of crisp coats of American Paint Company’s Navajo White. I usually go for APC’s Home Plate which is a more creamy antique white, but this bed was screaming for a whiter white.

I could have use American Paint Company’s Top Coat to finish it, but I chose to use use American Paint Company’s Clear Wax instead. I buffed it out as soon as I applied the wax using our drill buffing brush which creates the most amazing finish.

I can’t believe I never shared THIS!

Days have been coming and going so fast the past two years that I often feel like a top spinning out of control.

I’m exhausted, working two to three times the hours a person should. Even though I constantly try to improve on efficiency, I still can’t seem to put a dent in what needs to be done.

The hubby was kind enough to take the kids out for some last minute school supplies so I’m typing this post in a quiet house with my half worn-off toenail-polished toes staring back at me from the other end of my LaZboy.

While editing pictures from this past weekend and ran across a bunch of pictures from projects I’ve never shared with everyone and it dawned on me that that list is really starting to grow.

I’m not going into all the details for these right now but I wanted to share some of them anyway for inspiration.

This is a neat china cabinet I painted recently layering lots of APC’s colors. I love how this turned one turned out. We did a major overhaul on this cabinet.

One of these days… I’ll show you how we did it!

I also never wrote the post on how we changed a single chair into a bench for one of our dining room table transformationsThis old Pine Bench was transported from the 70’s past the Millennium with a simple wash of CeCe Caldwell’s Alaskan Tundra Green

and… I totally forgot about this!! It’s in my garage… somewhere!!

… this one is for me It’s going to serve as our new entertainment center or as a permanent extra piece of furniture in our living room (it’s already been sitting next to our other one for 10 weeks)

This beautiful princess bed sold before I could get it out of my garage. Someone is headed up this weekend to pick it up and make room for more projects. Yaaaaaay, or should I say Ahhhhhhhhhhh?

I have so many more in the bottomless pit of pictures I need to edit. I could seriously use a more up-dated photo editing software program!!

Vintage Cement Trowel Hooks on Reclaimed Barn Wood

Last week we ran across an old collapsed barn. When Opportunity Knocks… tear into an old barn and re-purpose that wood!

The barn wood was free for the pickin’ so we dropped everything and started tearing into the remnants of it in search of pieces we could re-purpose into table tops, signs and hooks.

It was hot and the debris was full of broken glass and rusty nails ~ we were in our glory!

We scored lots of great wood for table tops. I’m hoping to use this for a vintage library table I’ve been hoarding.

My sister Cathy spocked a ton of shutters. I’m not sure what’s she’s planning to do with these.

We climbed, heaved, hawed, pulled, pounded, wiggled, and pried to get the pieces we wanted. This piece weighed A TON! I couldn’t move it an inch until my niece’s husband showed up. In two minutes he had it over the edge and on the ground. SHOW OFF!

After spending hours tearing pieces apart, we had three truck loads of wood.

I came home absolutely filthy, covered from head to toe with dirt and blood running down my legs from all the cuts I had incurred. I was so excited about the wood that I never even realized I had cut myself. (yes I’m up to date with my Tetanus, you have to be when you’re as clumsy as I am). Nothing a good ole’ Popsicle can’t remedy!

I’m seriously out of shape and was too pooped out to start pulling out all those nails so we temporarily just piled it up at the end of our driveway. Oh, where are all the HGTV guys when you need them?

As tired as I was, I was still determined to make at least one creation before the sun set.

I grabbed some old tools to use as hooks. I picked some of these up when I was at the World’s Longest Yard Sale in Tennessee a couple weeks ago

and scored the others during my pickin trip with Karen Berg of Redoux Interiors when I was in California this spring for a Fundraising Paint Workshop.

I smashed my thumb a million times trying to pound the old nails through the metal, but determination prevailed!

This is exactly what I envisioned when I came across these old trowels

I’m serious, I’ve wanted to put these together for the longest time, just needed the right piece of wood.

Can’t wait to show Karen what I did with the trowels I found and share this with Donna from Funky Junk Interiors, the best junkers on the planet ~ I think they would have enjoyed digging through the collapsed barn too!!

Antique Vanity Painted in Custom Mixed Creamy White

If you’re subscribed to my blog or follow our daily updates on our Facebook Page, you’ve already seen the first two posts in this series about our Mahogany bedroom Set Makeover. I shared how we used My Favorite Stripper to refinish the beautiful Mahogany tops in the first post…

and in the 2nd post Antique Mahogany bed in Creamy White, I shared Cathy’s custom mixed recipe for the beautiful creamy white paint color we used for this entire set.

Today, I’m sharing some of the struggles I come across during the actual design process. This is where I tend to stumble and fall.

What do I want to draw attention to?

How much distressing will look best?

What overall look am I going for?

I HAD PLANNED to just do a very light distressing on this set because it had such pretty lines to begin with but once I got that damp rag in my hand, I was out of control like some kind of wild woman.

I must have been stressing the night I was experimenting on this. Yes, I try things out on the actual piece even though I always advise my customers to try it on test boards ~ what can I say? I don’t mind painting over something if I don’t like it but I never want to make more work for others. Anyway… I was stressed out that night and the more anxious I am, the more aggressive I am with my artwork.

Well… I got a little carried away with this one.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE how this foot turned out, just not on THIS piece.

Does that make sense?

I loved the two colors together but on this piece, I felt the highly distressed finish clashed with the elegant style of the set. I didn’t like it distressed this much… at all.

It wasn’t just the distressing I didn’t like, one of our favorite whites seemed too white against the highly pigmented finish on our Mahogany tops. That’s where the ease of mixing chalk and clay colors comes in so handy! Cath mixed up a beautiful creamy white which was far better suited for the color of our stained tops.

We new it was right as soon as the first brush stroke went up against the stained tops. It’s so quick once you know what you want.

We ended up LIGHTLY distressing the feet like this

Oh Wait!! I almost forgot the chair…

We chose some really nice upholstery fabric we inherited from dad’s workshop to recover the seat ~ thanks dad 😉

Oops! Hope I picked that bristle out of there!!

You’d think that would be natural for me with all the painting I’ve done, but I still don’t know… until I see it all together

Gorgeous Antique Mahogany Bed Painted in Creamy White

I checked out a beautiful antique bedroom set over the 4th of July and was immediately drawn to the beautiful lines and details of the furniture.

The entire set was very solid and well cared for ~ just needed a little TLC to give it new life.

Cathy and I teamed up to get this bedroom set knocked out. The first thing we did was a bleed thru test because we were dealing with solid mahogany. We placed a damp paper towel over the finish to see if any stain or finish wood leach up through it. It wasn’t even a minute, more like seconds and it had already turned orange/red meaning we had a bleeder!

No worries, we are always stocked with Zinnser’s Clear Shellac for just these occasions.

You can find this at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards and most other hardware stores and paint shops. We slapped on a quick coat to form a barrier before we started painting. Notice I said quick coat. It was the end of a long, hot day and the shellac dried incredibly fast.

Not taking the time to add a second coat proved to be a big mistake!

You don’t always need two coats if you get it covered well enough with one, but to be on the safe side, it’s best to apply two coats so you catch any spots you may have missed on the first swipe.

We painted up several sample boards to see which color we wanted underneath and decided on Dollar Bill from American Paint Company. It’s a beautiful smoky blue /gray, the same as CeCe Caldwell’s Smoky Mountain.

The paint went on beautifully but we had a LOT of pieces to cover!

Furniture was sprawled from my living room to the dining room, garage and onto the deck.

Everything was moving along as nice as can be until we started applying the white over it. That’s when we started noticing the tiniest specks of reddish orange. Oh no!! They were too faint for me to even capture with my camera but it was a red flag that we needed more of a barrier over that darn mahogany. Thank goodness it wasn’t everywhere!! We applied another coat of clear shellac, really taking our time to coat the surface well. Lesson learned! If you rush through the application of the shellac, it may not cover perfectly. I’m guessing it was drying so fast outdoors or that I was brushing so fast that I created tiny bubbles which later popped.

We planned to use APC’s Home Plate for the white, but decided later that we really wanted a creamier color. Cath pushed up her sleeves and started dumping, like only a true mixologist can ~ lol She added some Heaven’s Light and Rushmore to the Home Plate which created a very pretty cream color.

See the difference between the custom color on the left and APC’s Home Plate on the right? That’s the creaminess we came up with, well ~ not me, Cathy did and I love it!

Cathy and I tag teamed the distressing ~ I blasted through certain areas with my mouse sander to cut through to the base coat of Dollar Bill then exposed some of the wood. Cathy followed behind fine tuning everything with her keen eye for details. If you haven’t wet distressed chalk and clay paints yet, watch our how to video on wet distressing .

It’s super quick, clean and a fun way to distress. Here’s a close up of the foot board.

We sealed the entire bedroom set with APC’s Clear Antiquing Wax

…then buffed everything to a beautiful finish using our drill buffing brush

My favorite Stripper for removing Paint & Finishes

I’ve tried many strippers over the years

Many burn holes through your skin if you splash the tiniest spec of it onto your hand or arms.

Some don’t work for squat

but one is just right…

Zinnser’s Magic Strip Citrus-Action Gel

Why? Because I’m clumsy

and I don’t like it when my skin burns if tiny specs splatter on my skin

I know this because I’ve done it numerous times and it really stings! The fastest strippers also have a shorter working time. As soon as the harsh chemicals evaporate (minutes), they’re done working which means I have to start all over again with more stripper.

That makes me mad!

Zinnser’s Magic Strip Citrus-Action Gel works for me while I sleep. It stays wet for 24 hours meaning it will continue to eat through layers of paint and finishes as long as the gel remains wet. To insure the heat won’t dry it out, I throw a piece of waxed paper over it and let it work while I’m getting catching some ZZZ’s.

The next morning, it slides right off like butta! It not only works to remove paint, but also to remove old clear coats. We used it on the tops of all the pieces of the antique mahogany bedroom set we just refinished.

After all the old finish was removed and wiped down, I went over it with some Low Odor Mineral Spirits to make sure all the residue was cleaned off. These pieces turned out beautifully!

I used MinWax’s Jacobean to stain the tops. I wanted to make the tops a little darker because they were quite red when I purchased the set.

At this point I could have used a clear coat to seal it but I wanted more of a custom, high end finish so I opted for American Paint Company’s Dark Antiquing Wax. It’s my favorite. I love the way it looks with the custom cream color Cath mixed up for the body.

This is absolutely the look I wanted for this bedroom set and I’m tickled pink with how everything turned out. Being my own worst critic, I usually pick apart everything I do, so it was nice to be proud of everything in the end. Apparently somebody else liked it too; the entire set sold within minutes of setting it up in the store. Thank you!!

Black & Teal Console Table, heavily distressed

Summer in Michigan is all about quality time spent with family and friends. We were at the lake last month and hit

a flea market up north.

One of my husband’s friend is an exceptional chef. In this picture, he’s doing a shrimp boil for everyone ~ yum!!

Tom is also a pro at wheeling and dealing with people at the swap meets. The four of us got up early on the 4th and headed out to a local flea market. I feel uncomfortable negotiating prices but Tom is a natural at it. He had me practically rolling on the ground a couple of times, especially if Kathe gets in on the conversation. I’ve vowed to never go to another flea market again without them.

One of the items they helped me score is this console table. It already was solid and had great bones, just needed a little pizzazz!

Everyone’s been on my case about never painting black, what can I say, black furniture is not my thing but I bit the bullet anyway and gave it my best shot.

This piece was filthy so I gave it a good cleaning. I highly recommend APC’s all natural Surface Prep and Brush Cleaner for cleaning furniture and brushes. This stuff is the bomb! The bottle is concentrated so it goes a long way without taking up valuable space in your cabinet and makes cleaning much easier.

To create this look, I slapped on a quick, sloppy coat of American Paint Company’s Beach Glass. This serves as the base color which will peek through the black.

Shizzle Tip – After the teal dried, I noticed three different spots. You can’t really see them here but something had spilled on it at some point in time. Not to worry – I simply slapped on two quick coats of Zinnser’s Clear Shellac to block the spots and eliminate future bleed-through. I prefer to use the liquid form which comes in quarts and gallons but it’s also available in a spray can which is super convenient.

Shellac must be completely dry before applying any more paint.

I painted it with APC’s black called Lincoln’s Hat. (update, Lincoln’s Hat has been retired and replaced with Cannonball, an even darker black).

It looked nice but you know me, it was just killing me to see an entire piece of furniture in one solid color, so I grabbed a damp rag and my handy dandy mouse sander and went to town.

I’m a huge advocate for wet sanding, but in this case, I wanted to rip some of the finish back to the original wood grain (hence the sander).

Here’s what I ended up with.

Shizzle Style Painted Furniture Class Makeovers ~ July

Hope you’re all enjoying summer! Even though I’ve been working around the clock, I still savor each and every glorious day this time of year. If there was a way to magically stretch our Michigan summers from several weeks to nine months, I’d do it! In a heartbeat!

I scheduled a special week day workshop for Wendy who flew in from California. We needed to coordinate the class with her summer vacation to Michigan. We usually teach on the weekends but it would have fallen over the 4th of July weekend and quite honestly, I hate giving up my weekends ~ especially during our short summers when I could be spending it at the lake with my family.

When I added the Tuesday workshop, I was skeptical it would fill up but it sold out right away ~ shows you how much I know! I guess I’m not the only one who cherishes their weekends!!

Enough rambling… lets get to the good stuff!

Wendy brought in an old drum table to refinish. There was quite a bit of contrast between the dark stain and the chippy white paint.

She painted a base coat of CeCe Caldwell’s Kentucky Mint and was amazed at how well it covered her existing finish with one coat.

When the first coat was dry, Wendy layered over that with Johnson Daffodil, did some light distressing then sealed it with Clear and Light Antiquing Wax from American Paint Company.

Wendy’s friend Peggy brought in a neat shadow box end table to refinish

She changed the entire look of it in no time using a little Nantucket Spray and Myrtle Beach Sand from CeCe Caldwell’s Paints.

Sheila was the third friend of this trio and was a true delight! She brought in a large frame to a bulletin board.

She painted a quick layer using CeCe Caldwell’s Memphis Blue, waited for it to dry then layered over it in either CeCe’s Destin Gulf Green or American Paint Company’s Beach Glass. I can’t remember now which one she used because the colors are virtually the same between the two lines.

Sheila’s bulletin board frame turned out so cool and I wish you could feel it. She did a lot of wet distressing with a damp rag which made her frame feel as smooth as butta!

How to Wet Distress Video

This next table was painted in one of my favorite color combinations. It’s beautiful in and of itself and creates the most beautiful glaze or wash over other colors. The color I’m talking about is Cinco Bayou Moss from CeCe Caldwell’s which is the same as Desert Cactus from American Paint Company.

This was applied over Virginia Chestnut from CeCe’s which is the same as Wild Horses from American Paint Company. I can’t remember which was used as it’s another duplicate color between the two lines. No matter what you call it, this color combination is so sophisticated. Can you tell I like it?

Corey scored this small fireplace mantel at a local flea market. It was in pretty rough shape when she came in but after a quick base coat of brown, it was already taking on an entirely different look. and had already received it’s first coat of white by the time I shot this picture.

She painted it in either Home Plate by American Paint Company or Vintage White by CeCe Caldwell’s ~ another duplicate color. It’s been so busy this month that I can’t remember what I did this morning let along a couple weeks ago.

I LOVE how she wet distressed back to the brown and the original wood finish!

She wasn’t able to finish it the day of the class but it was already looking VERY cool when she left!

One of the girls who came to our workshop had won our FREE workshop Giveaway. Her mom actually won the giveaway but she gave the gift of creativity to her daughter for her birthday. How cool is that?

Kate was so appreciative of her gift and loads of fun; her personality shined through the transformation of her old stereo cabinet. How adorable is this? She layered it in Destin Gulf Green and Santa Fe Turquoise then inserted a fresh piece of Chevron fabric and BAM

And then there’s Tiffany, there’s nobody quite like Tiffany. Self proclaimed my biggest stalker, she know’s her stuff and gives a whole meaning to the word hilarious. I think she has more energy than the Energizer rabbit. She’s probably thinking “hey Shell, are you EVER going to write this post?”

Tiffany brought in the most adorable vintage cupboard and quickly gave it a nice base coat of brown.

Then she started using everyone’s left-over colors to create a funky old-world finish by dry-brushing and layering color after color. She was painting away like a mad woman; must have burned 800 calories ~ lol. I need to learn from her as I continue to gain!!

She wanted a turquoise color but CeCe’s Santa Fe Turquoise was a little too bright so we added in a little Destin Gulf Green to tone it down a little. She took her time to meticulously paint and wet distress her piece to perfection!
