End Grain Butcher Block Island by Cento Anni

One of the neatest things about my line of work is meeting other people who share the dream to create something truly unique.  There are so many talented people out there whose minds are bursting with innovative ideas.

A couple months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Ed from Cento Anni.  Cento Anni was born when a father and son’s project, intended to teach some valuable life lessons, evolved into a family owned business.

They began this journey by hand crafting end grain cutting boards for friends and relatives but before they knew it, the word was out and Cento Anni was born.

Located in Holland, Michigan, Cento Anni combines old world craftsmanship with 100% locally sourced, repurposed American hardwoods to produce some of the finest custom woodworking projects available.

Their specialty is a line of high quality end grain cutting boards.  Each board is uniquely prepared and no two boards are exactly alike due to the material selection and hand crafted nature of the process.

The work they do is truly an art form.  When I first saw the boards, I thought ~ there’s no way, these are way too nice to actually use, but their quality is superior, built to last with equal parts functionality and appeal.

Intrigued by the all natural nature of chalk and clay paints, Ed asked me if I’d be interested in painting the base for one of the small islands he had put together.  I agreed and decided to create a finish that would be enhance the beautiful wood without competing for attention.

In my own Shizzle Style, I just kept layering and layering and layering colors until I ended up with an old world finish.

This second one shows you the Wax Buffing Brush Attachment that we use to achieve a fabulous finish in minutes.  Pardon my gross appearance; the workouts start TODAY!

I’m attempting to create this video from my Ipad which isn’t going the greatest, so I’ll leave this short and sweet

Thanks for hanging out with me ~ Have an AWESOME weekend!!

“Quiet Place” Beach Table

I’ve been buried lately in an endless mountain of paperwork.  Can I just say that getting everything ready for your accountant is pain in the butt when you’re self employed with a painting business?  I can’t stand paperwork, so for me, this is torture.
“Lets go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while”  Mark 6:31

Needless to say, I haven’t had much time to rest or paint lately but I have a very talented friend who has started hand painting pieces exclusively for Shizzle Design.

Meet Local Artist ~ Laurie Miller!
(photo coming soon)
She acquired the most amazing talent for painting recently which seems to have come out of nowhere.  I like to joke with her that she must have been struck with lightening.  She just laughs but has no idea why she can suddenly paint these beautiful images with no previous experience or training.  It must be a God given talent that she’s suddenly tapped into, we don’t know ~ but it’s amazing none the less.

Laurie is the sweetest, most humble person you’ll ever meet and she just laughs nonchalantly when I compliment her incredible talent.

Laurie painted this beautiful antique side table which she named ~ Quiet Place.
This painting was inspired by Mark 6:31 where Jesus said “Lets go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while”

Wow!  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t think of many more relaxing places than a comfy chair on the beach.

The fresh air, sunshine and waves crashing onto shore sooth my soul like magic.

Laurie painted the legs in a combination of CeCe Calwell’s Blue Montana Sky and Omaha Ochre accenting it with Destin Gulf Green.

It is so pretty.  It goes perfectly in the beach house I’ve been dreaming about all my life ~ some day, some day.

This one of a kind table is headed to the Shizzle Design booth in Not So Shabby in Holland, Michigan.

To check out the availability of this piece, click here.

Thanks Laurie!!  YOU rock!!

Shizzle Style Paint Workshop at Michigan State University

Michigan State University is BIG on being GREEN!

Table painted by one of our students at our last workshop

Their hopes are once you “Go Green”, you’ll “Stay Green” They have an amazing facility on campus called the MSU Surplus Store.  They’re rethinking every aspect possible to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in our landfills.

Reduce ~ Recycle ~ Re-use

Their theory is “once you go green, you’ll stay green” ~ and it’s working.  Last year, they diverted over 50% of the 30 MILLION POUNDS of materials they received!  Now that’s cool!

They researched new ways to make our world more environmentally friendly and discovered, that unlike most other paints on the market, our paints are 100% ALL natural including not only chalk but clay which yields the most amazing finish!

They know there are lots of paints on the market with low VOC’s, but our paints are a better choice because they have NO VOC’s!

I can paint right in my house.  How cool is that? Did you know that CeCe Caldwell’s Paints & American Paint Company Paints are also Latex Free an Acrylic Free?  That’s huge for people who suffer from allergies!

Michigan State University (MSU) chose Shizzle Design to teach a furniture painting workshop on campus in Lansing, Michigan.

We’re were very honored to be chosen for as the instructors to teach this Special Furniture Painting Workshop MSU on Saturday, April 6   Reserve your space for this class HERE  Sold Out

Repurposed Turquoise Highboy Dresser Serves as Coffee Station in Hair Salon on Lake Macatawa

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a “blue” person, but when I picked up this antique highboy a while back, I kept imagining it in shades of turquoise blues and greens.

The original finish on the piece was an antique white which looked pretty in and of itself until you got a closer look.  It definitely needed a little sprucing up.  I started out by painting a quick layer of  gray.

Her personality was bursting at the seams so I decided to give her an cute little outfit to match.  I grabbed all my leftover cans of paint and started slapping them on with no real rhyme or reason.

Cuz that’s how I roll!

I just kept working in the colors as I went along; the next few shots are showing the raw paint before I waxed it.

The color looks pale before it’s waxed but I knew the wax would kick it up a notch.

Here comes the wax!

This piece sold right away and I was fortunate enough to meet the gal when she came in to pick it up.

This piece sold immediately and I was fortunate enough to meet the gal when she came in to pick it up.  She’s building a new hair salon on Lake Macatawa and this will serve as her new coffee station!  How COOL is that?

She had a piece of glass cut for the top where she’ll have her coffee pot… and the coffee, tea, sugar, cups… will be stored underneath in the drawers.

I’m tickled pink over the whole idea of it!

I often don’t get to meet the people who buy my furniture at the store since I’m home painting, so this was pretty cool.

Wax Video on Emerald Green Dresser

Pantone named Emerald Green the Color of the year for 2013

Well you can imagine my excitement then, when I saw the first case of CeCe Caldwell’s Emerald Isle Paint on my pallet.

I’m sure the guy on the dock thought I was totally goofy when he saw me beam from ear to ear.  After we offloaded the pallet, I grabbed a dresser from the workshop and busted into a can.

In this picture the paint is drying, the drier parts are lighter.

This is what it looks like after a coat of Emerald Green sealed with Clear Wax.

You can see how I applied the wax in this video

I decided I wanted to antique it with dark wax.  You can see the difference where I’ve applied it.

This isn’t a very good picture, it looks all funky because the dark wax isn’t completely dried.  I was losing light, so I’ll try to get some better pictures tomorrow.

I think the close up shows it best.

Well, what do you think?  Do you have somewhere you can add a splash of color?

King Size Bed all Dressed up in Red

I thought Valentines Day was a great day to share the king size bed I painted in CeCe Caldwell’s Traverse City Cherry.

I decided to paint this in my living room so I’d have lots of room to spread out all the pieces.  LOVE working in here, so much nicer than my TINY workshop, this king size headboard never would have fit!

I could totally get used to using this space ~ wonder what my husband would think of that?  hmm…

I gave it a quick base coat of CeCe Caldwell’s Virginia Chestnut but  you can also use American Paint Company’s Wild Horses for this deep base.  I wanted a deep espresso to show through when I did the wet distressing.

Virginia Chestnut has a funky color to it when it’s dry like it is in this picture, but when you wax it ~ it is fabulous!!  Traverse City Cherry freaks people too out when they use it the first time because it has a definite pink cast to it when it dries.  For a more warm, rich red, I recommend American Paint Company’s Firework’s Red.  If it would have been available when I did this set, I definitely would have chosen that over the Traverse City Cherry.

Here she is after the wax.

It’s rich and scrumptious!

See how pretty the brown and red look now?  Happy Valentines Day!!!

Now that you know how easy it is, go try it and have a blast making over your first piece!!

VIDEO – How to Wet Distress Paint

Hi guys!  Happy snowy morning to ya.

The storm that’s rolling through just dumped another foot of snow on West Michigan ~ you know what that means ~ SNOW DAY!!!

No worries though, ‘cuz my cousin Matt of Pro Mow Landscaping is to the rescue!

The kids are still nestled under their heated blankets

Little do they know when they wake up, it’s operation “clean the house ‘cuz it’s another furniture painting workshop weekend” at the Andrade house.

It’s been so cold and we’ve had so much snow this week that I’ve decided to move the workshops that we normally set up in the garage to the luxury of our toasty warm living room.  We only heat this part of the garage for the workshops but the part of my workshop that I keep heated year round is small ~ VERY small.  It works great for a dresser but even something like a buffet is too wide for me to easily work around.

I decided to paint their bedroom furniture in our living room, OK OK, the furniture actually sprawled through our living room AND dining room when you tack on several other projects I’m working on.

Guess what?  I LOVED it!!  Call me crazy, but this may just be the new norm.  I actually got the idea when I started painting a king size bedroom set a few days ago.

Anyway… in the middle of my makeover, I got a wild hair to show you how easy it is to wet distress CeCe Caldwell’s Paint with just a damp rag.  Here goes!  Never mind that it is totally unedited ~ you’re getting Shelly here, up close and personal.  My hair isn’t brushed and apparently I can’t put my pj’s on right side out ~ lol!  Enjoy!!

Learn How Easy it is to Wet Distress with CeCe Caldwell’s Paint

Here’s how it looks after being wet distressed

I did this right in the comfort of my living room since it doesn’t create any dust like sanding does  and CeCe Caldwell’s line is completely all natural ~ 100% green.

CeCe Caldwell’s Paints are Latex Free!

To Watch the Wet Distressing Video, click here

Our paint is latex free which is not only great news for people with latex allergies, but is also what makes our paint so easy to distress.

You have to wet distress BEFORE you wax it because waxing seals the deal

Check out the finished bed here

Now that you know how easy it is, go try it and have a blast making over your first piece!!

Hang it up! Things that hang things

I concentrate most of my time painting furniture for my booth at Not So Shabby, but I’m also always looking for smaller items to fill in the gaps.  I have a million things on my “I wanna make this” list, it’s just finding the time to do them.

The themed link up Funky Junk Interiors this week is Hang it Up which reminded me of a few of my favorite creations which I don’t think I’ve ever shared on here before.

One of my favorites is to use a reclaimed piece of wood with various hooks and picture frames.  I have a thing for photographs, so I’m always trying to come up with different ways to display them.

Here’s another one that I made out of the twin piece of reclaimed wood I had at the time.

One of my all time favorite “Hang it up” pieces was a Bling Thing that I made out of parts of old furniture.  I like the architectural interest of this one, with function to boot!

Last year, I scored a large, solid wood door which came out of an old hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  I loved the vintage Fire Escape that was on it, we just cleaned it up and added one of my favorite hooks to create a unique architectural piece.

Upholstered bulletin boards are another favorite of mine, especially with decorative thumb tacks.  I made these using heavy duty upholstery tacks and old buttons.  I love the colors in this Tommy Bahama fabric and the beaded trim is the icing on the cake.  These are all my favorite colors in one piece of fabric.

I also am in love with these types of hooks.  I pick them up whenever I find them.

I wish I had some pictures of the windows I’ve done.  They always sell before I remember to take a picture – ugh!  Next time!!

A hui hou ~ Shelly

How I Created a Faux Zinc Finish

Does it ever take way longer for anyone else to accomplish things?  It does for me like ALL THE TIME.

image I painted this in one of my favorite colors, Young Kansas Wheat the day I got it but it just didn’t do anything for me.  It was too plane Jane for my liking.  It needed something, a French Label, a stencil, dry brushing, layering ~ something.

I pondered ideas while I waited for a light bulb to go off…

August
September
October
November
December
2013

Finally it hit me ~ I’d try a faux zinc finish to resemble those pieces in Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn.

I’ve seen a lot of different versions for this but two of my favorites were created by Jami at Freckled Laundry and Kelli from Restore Interiors.

This is the zinc finish that Jami from Freckled Laundry created
I know!  It ROCKS!
Stop by Freckled Laundry and Jami’s amazing transformation!
Jami created the neatest finish on her night stand which I like even better than the expensive inspiration piece!

The other super cool vintage faux zinc table that I thought would be appropriate for my table top was inspired by Kelli from Restore Interiors.

L O V E   IT   K E L L I  !
Kelli is amazing both inside and out and her talent ~ wow… stop by Restore Interiors and check it out!
So, with inspiration at my fingertips, I proceeded with my experiment.
I painted the table top with CeCe Caldwell’s Vermont Slate.
Gave it a thin wash with Dover White
Then sealed it with CeCe Caldwell’s Clear Wax (I didn’t have any gilding was) so I mixed the clear with a plop of metallic silver paint, some Dover White, a splash of low odor Mineral Spirits and water.
So far, so good.  I spritzed it with water
Lots and lots of water, until it was completely soaked!
When I came back the next morning, this is what I found
Isn’t this cool?  I loved it but thought I should add one more layer, ya know… for a little more dimension.
UGH ~ WHY CAN’T I LEAVE ANYTHING ALONE!!!
I messed it up!
I had a really cool finish and I messed it up!
I just couldn’t leave well enough alone.
I’m so mad at myself.
I farted around with it some more to make it look more like a weathered / lime wash look, but gave up on the faux zinc for this one.  No worries though ~ I will to zinc again, soon!
