Yes, I paint mahogany. I paint oak. I paint all sorts of wood furniture so if you’re an avid lover of all wood furniture being stained to accentuate all the grain, this probably isn’t a read for you.
I am a furniture painter by trade and I personally prefer chalk painted furniture hands down over solid wood pieces unless it’s something really special like a piece made out of Koa. If you do like chalk painted furniture and want to see the beautiful results on this buffet makeover, continue reading below.
The first paint class has been scheduled and spaces are already filling up for this Saturday’s Workshop. I’ll be teaching this at the amazing new store fantastic new store call The Honeysuckle Co. on the North end of Grand Rapids.

A good friend of mine talked me into expanding my horizons by placing all my DIY Chalk & Clay paint supplies and Vintiquities Brushes in their amazing new store.
This is where you’ll be taking the class!
I sell Debi’s DIY paints and finishes along with all my brushes at this location so you’ll be able to grab supplies after the class. Paint supplies purchased the day of the class will be discounted for everyone in the workshop so it’s a great time to stock up. If you intend to buy a bunch of product, please email your list along with sizes of each item to: shizzledesign@gmail.com.. That way you’ll be sure to get everything you want at the discounted price the day of class. Please email or message me your list by Friday and I’ll have everything ready for you when you arrive. You of course can swap things out or change your mind the day of class but at least you’ll be sure to get what you want. I do sell paint at that location but I typically only stock a couple of each size and color.
Teaching is one of the best parts about my job and after putting that on hold for almost four years, I’m excited to finally have a date on the schedule. I’ve taught hundreds of people over the years how to work with chalk and clay paints.
I’ve enjoyed teaching every class from the workshops I taught at home,
to the free demo’s at our Shizzle Shop
to the amazing workshop taught at MSU
Keynote Speakers at the Women’s Expo at Devos
but I’m super excited about the new space to teach at The Honeysuckle Co.

Have you ever gotten sick of an old outfit? Even if you have a great shape, the same old thing can get a little boring after say… 80 years or so.
When I found this antique buffet, I felt sorry for her because all her beautiful features seemed to fade away in a giant wall of stain. Sorry ~ I forgot to snap a before picture.
I knew from the get go I wanted to transform her outfit into something spectacular, something for a night out on a town, but I couldn’t decide where to start.
So I turned on the radio, popped open a few cans of paint and let her speak to me. That happens you know, when you’re all alone in the workshop, day after day – the furniture starts talking to you ~ lol
As the colors were going on I remembered an old piece of fabric left over from another project and decided to apply it to the drawer fronts. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about!
I also lined the drawers with upholstery fabric.
I kept tweaking things here and there until she was dressed to kill in her new outfit.
We dropped her off to my booth in Not So Shabby last night just as they were closing:) sold

This piece was painted in Annie Sloan back years ago. Since this post, I’ve learned so much. I worked around the clock for a year using these products but continued to have difficulties achieving a quality finish with their wax. I tried other several other waxes by different companies, some were hard, other’s were a little easier to blend in and work with but also had those terrible fumes.
I experienced months of recurring respiratory problems and even with my exhaust system, I was advised to remove as many chemical hazards from my environment as possible or find another line of work in order to get well. I donated all the paints I had on hand and started searching for better products.
That search eventually led me to the products I use today, all natural, eco-friendly chalk and clay based paints. From the first time I tried them, I was sold. It may seem drastic, but after mohths of appts, tests, MRI’s and breathing tests at the hospital, it was a God send. The paints I use now are so much easier to work with. It spreads easier, covers better, adheres well and the wax and finishes have been life changing! I can’t believe how easy they are to work with and it’s so awesome not to work with those horrible chemicals. They also cure well so you’re not left with a smeary mess that never seems to stop smearing months after it’s finished.
For my style of painting, I can achieve a much more superior finish and can create it much faster eliminating the stress of working so hard to achieve something that’s easy with a chalk and clay mixture.
I love these paints so well that I decided to share what I do with our followers. Follow me at ShizzleLLC on Facebook or ShizzleDesign on Instagram for daily updates on projects I’m working on. I moved into my third location on the North end of Grand Rapids last week.
A good friend of mine talked me into expanding my horizons by placing all my DIY Chalk & Clay paint supplies and Vintiquities Brushes in their amazing new store.
Their family bought a building, completely renovated it in less than three months transforming it from a doctor’s office into a cool new store full of homegoods and hand picked vintage.
They’re big into creating community and one of the neatest twists to their store is the awesome venue space in the back.
Classes and workshops will be offered but this space is also available to rent for things such as bridal or baby showers… I should have shot a panoramic because this is only half of the back room.
There’s also a kitchenette, bathroom of course and other fun nooks and crannies if you’re looking for a cool venue to rent. The window side is pretty much all glass which allows for great lighting and I believe it will seat up to 50. I’m not positive on that but will find out and pass along the info.
I painted this buffet yesterday during the Grand Opening of The Honeysuckle Co.
Thanks so much to all of you who came out for yesterday’s grand opening. What an amazing turnout! It was so fun to see so many old friends and to meet so many new and interesting people. Such a fun day, plus I got a piece painted in the process. I’ll do my best to get in and finish that this week. I’m not sure if the buffet will be for sale at The Honey Suckle Co. or Not So Shabby but will let you know.
The Creamy White vintage highboy I recently refinished is also available for sale (below). Amy literally snagged that out of my workshop last week. Ummm yeah, I need to wax that bottom drawer. It felt so smooth, I fooled myself but I knew it hadn’t been waxed yet. Can somebody say squirrel?
I’m fortunate in that I’ve been asked to teach paint workshops in this amazing space. Teaching is one of the best parts about my job and after putting that on hold for almost four years, I’m excited to finally have a date on the schedule. The first furniture painting workshop is scheduled for January 12th.
I’ve enjoyed teaching every class from the workshops I taught at home,
to the free demo’s at our Shizzle Shop
to the workshop taught at Michigan State University
to being Keynote Speakers at the Women’s Expo at Devos
but I’m super excited about the new space to teach at The Honeysuckle Co.

With accumulating snow in the forecast and opening season for deer season a week away, it’s officially beginning to feel like winter in our neck of the woods. New Christmas items are arriving daily and selling as fast as I bring them in.
I hand pick unique items and price them to sell every year so I don’t have to store them. Stop by weekly for best selection. I’ll be in to Not So Shabby (2975 West Shore Drive, Holland, MI 49424) tonight to restock paint and more Christmas as my van is bursting at the seams with more treasures. Hoping to get to Changing Thymes as well but I may not make it there until tomorrow.
I apologize in advance for my unedited pictures. I have very little time to put out a professional blog these days but you should be able to get an idea of what I have. All these pictures are from my Not So Shabby location. I have some Christmas items at Changing Thymes as well but not nearly the volume I have here.
PS ~ for a SNEAK PEEK of what I brought in tonight…

This white highboy was painted while I being filmed for an upcoming episode of HGTV’s House Hunters. The West Michigan couple purchased a house during the show and wanted to learn how to refinish furniture for their new place. I was asked to come in for filming to teach them how to paint furniture in a farmhouse style similar to that of what Joanna Gaines does in her designs on Fixer Uppers. Stay tuned for the upcoming episode of House Hunters. They said they were airing 6 months out so it could be a while.

Thanks so much for following Shizzle ~ I appreciate you!!
I love teaching furniture painting workshops and hope to start doing them again soon. One of the best parts is seeing different color combinations that people choose. Somebody asked me for inspiration yesterday on a table she just picked up and I had an idea immediately. Several years ago, somebody in the workshop we taught at Michigan State University layered white over blue and it was absolutely gorgeous!
There were so many awesome furniture makeovers from the workshop we taught at Michigan State University. Everyone did an amazing job!! I gave them a little guidance then was BLOWN AWAY by their finished pieces.
The first piece I’m sharing is this beautiful hand carved antique table
Martha had it in her shop for a while and it wasn’t getting much attention so she thought she’d take a whirl at painting it. She started out by giving it a coat of blue/gray. I typically use gray under white but I absolutely love the combo Martha did. We no longer carry CeCe Caldwell. If I were to replicate this look now, I’d use either Dollar Bill or Tarnished Platter from APC.
It was gorgeous with one quick coat!
but she was on a roll… She wanted certain areas to have more coverage with the 2nd color while still popping the details with the first. Demonstrating on her piece, I showed everyone how I do it.
Well, let me tell you ~ Martha is a quick learner! While I was going around the room helping other gals ~ she did this with a little Vintage White!
A little wet distressing and a little Clear Wax sealed the deal. Here’s a shot of the finished piece. It hasn’t been buffed yet in this photo but it’s already breath taking!!
Isn’t it AWESOME!! I don’t think she’ll have any trouble selling it now!!
Great job Martha!!
I’ll start teaching again as soon as I’m able. Right now I have my hands full dealing with cancer in my family.
