Antique Bed in Georgia Clay

My sister Cathy just finished painting this bed in Georgia Clay.  It was layered over Vermont Slate and Vintage White then distressed to create an old world finish.

This was her first project using CeCe Caldwell’s Paints and I think she knocked it out of the park!

She’s been dying to get her hands on this paint for a few months now, but she was so busy preparing for her daughter’s wedding, she didn’t have a chance ~ until now.

This is the project she tackled with it!  I knew this bed would be a knock out, but my jaw totally hit the floor when I saw her awesome transformation using CeCe Caldwell’s Paints.  She totally put me to shame on her very first piece!  What a brat.

She layered the bed in Vermont Slate, Vintage White and Georgia Clay distressing in between to reveal the various layers.  Ok, seriously… is the distressing on this amazing or what?  I may be bias because she’s my sister, but I LOVE IT!!  Check out the finials on the footboard – GORGEOUS!!!

Yes, the neighbors were coming out of the woodwork to see if Country Living or Better Homes and Gardens were on site – lol!  We had fun with it!!
Here’s another close up of all that yummy layering!

Update: We immediately had a ton of interest in this bed which found a new home in Long Island, NY.

If you’d like to do something like this yourself, we can help you out there too.

Whimsical Little Girl’s Dresser with Hand Painted Flowers

I’ve been inspired with color ever since we took our daughter to the Children’s Museum in Portland, Oregon years ago.  The museum was filled with vibrant colors and I couldn’t help but embrace the joy in my daughter’s eyes as she explored everything in sight.

Since I had rented homes with blah white walls in Hawaii, I couldn’t wait to finally break out some color when we purchase our first home.  To me, the entire property was a clean slate.  Our 100 year old home had lots of character already but my personality calls for color ~ lots of it!

I had a blast transforming her room with color (I’ll post about that later) and even though I lean toward more of the French look with my furniture finishes, I can’t help to wander back to that inner whimsy of doing uniquely painted children’s furniture.

When I picked up this dresser, I knew it would be a great size for a little girl’s room and would also be a great fit with all the storage for someone’s nursery.  With those thought in mind, I chose my colors and went to town..   Here’s what I came up with!

I started monkeying around with one of my favorite CeCe Caldwell’s combos ~ Destin Gulf and Spring Hill Greens.  With whimsy in mind, I started drafting out ideas on how to make this really unique.

I met with three experts to get their advice on the color for the focal flower.

The vote was unanimous – New Orlean’s Purple!
I sealed everything with a coat of clear wax.
I gave the top of the dresser and the knobs a super durable topcoat of CeCe Caldwell’s Satin Finish
She’s sitting pretty in the Shizzle Design booth at Not So Shabby waiting a little girls to come along and love.

Thanx for stopping by, hope you enjoyed a little detour from my usual style:)  For this project I used a combination of Destin Gulf Green, Spring Hill Green, New Orlean’s Purple, Traverse City Cherry mixed with Kissimmee Orange and Carolina Sun Yellow ~ I think that’s it:)  Explore all the colors of CeCe Caldwell’s Paints and get inspired by other projects here.  I carry a large supply of CeCe Caldwell Paints on our online Shizzle Shop here and in our Shizzle Design booth at Not So Shabby in downtown Zeeland here.  You can also keep up on all our newly painted designs.  Subscribe to our Blog, Like our Facebook Page or Pin away our pieces on Pinterest.  Have a great weekend, Shelly

Funky Antique Drum Table & a Winner for our CeCe Caldwell’s Paint Giveaway

Funky Color Combo on an Antique Drum Table

It’s been crazy busy here between painting furniture for clients and painting other furniture to replace the pieces which keep selling at Not So Shabby Antiques and Fine Furniture in downtown Zeeland.

I’ve also been really busy with stocking paint, pouring paint, packing and shipping online orders, shooting – resizing – editing & downloading photos, advertising, and writing posts for my blog.   That being said, I’ll keep this quick.

Here’s the Funky Antique Drum Table I finished last week using a combination of CeCe Caldwell’s Cinco Bayou Moss, Spring Hill Green, Smoky Mountain and a Vintage White.

I love the lion head drawer pulls and the metal claw feet on this piece.
I just kept layering and blending until I ended up something totally unique and unexpected.

It seems like you just can’t go wrong mixing CeCe Caldwell’s Colors.

It’s fun to see the difference color makes on the same piece.  Compare this table to two other round pedestal tables I painted recently.  All three of them have are unique.

Save Money ~ Update outdated furniture hardware with paint!

Have you ever had a piece of furniture that you loved except for the hardware?  Don’t throw it out, in just a few minutes, you can give it new life with paint!

This French Provincial lingerie chest was in excellent condition when I found it but it had that funky speckled ivory colored faux finish on it.  You know the one I’m talking about, the type trimmed in gold?  Yep, that’s the one!  I love the style but the white drawer pulls were not cutting it.  at all.

I painted the piece then used 0000 steel wool to burnish the finish then got started on the hardware.

I love how the steel wool changes the look and feel of the raw paint.  The paint seems to take on an entirely different dimension and has so much more character than just a solid color.

I was in love with everything except the glossy white hardware.  What were they thinking?  It didn’t even look good on the original.  I love the style but the white had to go.  It was way too much “in my face”.

I had to decide on a color to paint them so I pulled out a box of vintage hardware and found a piece for inspiration.  I looked closely to see the different color variations then grabbed similar colors from our stash of chalk & clay paints and went to town.

Because these were a super glossy white lacquer, I gave them a VERY quick spritz of metallic spray paint.  Typically this step will be eliminated because hardware is usually brass or some other type of metal.

The next step is a VERY quick and sloppy coat of green, teal, blue…
The next layer is always a deep, dark color such.  Two of my favorites are Frenchic’s Panther and APC’s Gun Powder.  Simply brush over the high points and voila!  You’ll start to see your piece take shape.
I like to protect my beautifully updated drawer pulls with Dark Wax or Clear Coat.  I tend to gravitate towards dark wax but either works fine.
This particular dresser was one of the very first pieces I did years ago.  Now of course we have numerous metallic mica powders which can be dabbed into the wax for just a touch of glimmer.  I LOVE painting hardware!

It took less than 20 minutes to paint all seven drawer pulls and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results!

Want to change your hardware?  Well… what are you waiting for!  It’s easy!  I know you can do it!  Head on over to our portfolio for ideas and inspiration here.  If you’re unsure on colors, shoot us an email along with a picture of your hardware and we’ll help you choose your colors.  We carry a large supply of chalk and clay paints on our Online Shizzle Shop and here in West Michigan.

Vintage Buffet Layered in Rich Color ~ One of my all time favorite Pieces

I am so honored to guest post for Karen Berg at Redoux Interiors today!

Karen runs her own furniture and cabinet refurbishing company in the San Francisco Bay area and is AHmazingly talented.

Karen and I have never met in person but we have laughed together so many times over every day things that she feels like a lifelong friend.  Karen’s introduction of me was pretty funny, that girl doesn’t forget anything, you can read it all here.

When Karen first called to ask me about guest posting for her, I was totally geeked and then the jitters set in.  I wanted to present something that measured up to Karen’s level of painting, blogging and spunky style – but what?  After all, it was only a year ago that I painted my first piece of furniture – what did I have to offer?

Standing in my garage, I spotted an old buffet I purchased a while back.  I thought it would make a cool bathroom vanity but there were a few repairs that needed to be made before I could paint it.

The biggest issue I faced was how to fix the warped top.  I removed the top and tried several suggestions to flatten it but it wouldn’t budge.  It was constructed of is 3/4″ thick solid oak boards – what was I thinking?

I went next door and asked my neighbor to give me a lesson on using a router; specifically his router.  He’s a finish carpenter and I needed two different routers and three different bits to create the profile.  This was my first time using any router, let alone two but it was a blast to see the results.  Good thing I didn’t slip ‘cuz I had only purchased one piece!

I wish you could have seen me when I was finished routing.  I was literally covered from head to toe in a thick layer of sawdust. You’ve heard of the sandman, well I was the sawdust monster.  I’m used to doing goofy things but I know what I want, so I do whatever it takes to get it done.  See my fierce determination and brute strength?  I can tell, you’re intimidated now – lol!

Karen laughs at me because I dig up shrubs and trees and move them around the yard like living room furniture. Seriously, I can’t be the only one out there who does this ~ am I?

Karen asked me to share some of my layering techniques with you today.  I’m really not sure what I do differently because I’ve never had training, but I’ll do my best to show you some of my paint techniques.

For this antique buffet, I did a base coat of Brown which I watered down a little so the paint would easily seep into every nook and cranny of the grainy wood & details.  I LOVE using this as an undercoat!  I just can’t get enough of it.

When it was dry, I went over it with a light gray.  I love layering paint colors!  I watered this top color down a bit creating somewhat of a wash so the base color would pop through.  It also allows me to leave certain areas a little bare so the first color fades through almost as though it has worn naturally that way.  I like it this way; it adds depth and plays a role in the old world finish I like to achieve.

When I initially paint a piece, I look it over and determine which features I want to draw attention to and which ones I want to downplay.  I loved the detail across the bottom so I just lightly dry brushed the molding.  I wanted the contrast of the Brown to really make a statement here.

This is where I step back and try to figure out what I’m going to do next.  I don’t have any normal methods and have never taken an art class.  I follow my own quirky path and simply design what I like.     My goal is to create one-of-a-kind pieces that will steal the focus of any room.  Do I always achieve that – no, but I try.

I wanted to bring out the texture of the wood grain a little more, so I lightly, I mean very lightly, dry brushed a vintage white in areas I wanted to highlight.  There were a few times it went on too heavy but no worries, I just blotted it off with a damp rag and started over again.

This strange looking fly flew in to check it out.  I think he likes it; what do you think – lol!

I painted the appliques in a mix of grays, adding some of the other colors here and there until I liked the way it looked.  Because I paint with all natural clay and chalk based mineral paints, I can use a wet rag to distress areas by simply doing a rub, rub, rub over those areas.  No sandpaper, no dust, no mess.  I love doing it this way, but it doesn’t take much to entertain me : D

When you look at the piece as a whole, you can see each section varies a little in how I finished it.  I do this intentionally so each portion isn’t matchy – matchy.  That’s not my style.

You won’t find me with my hair done up or my nails manicured.  I brush my hair, throw on a visor and some thrift store clothes and call it good.  In much the same way, I like the character to shine through in my furniture re-designs.  I want my pieces to be unique and their finishes to have lots of variations.

So are you ready to see the finished piece?  Here goes…

What do you think?  I love the brown undertones showing through the paint.  It gives the illusion that I’ve spent hours antiquing it when I’ve basically just used a very simple layering technique to achieve this look and sealed it with clear wax.  Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t happen overnight.  I’m the type of person who needs time to process how things look and I tinker with the details until they’re just right.  Yes, I drive myself bonkers most of the time, but it pays off in the end.

I shot this picture to show off my first routered piece.  My camera is conking out on me so this shot is way dark, but you should be able to see it.  I have to admit, I’m pretty proud of this first time router job.  All I would have had to do is hit the tiniest piece of sawdust or tilt it ever so slightly and the whole profile could have been messed up.  These routers are that sensitive.  Dave also told me “don’t put your hand in there or you’ll lose it”.   Yikes!!

To create the perfect shade for the top, I mixed a dark and medium gray (don’t ask proportions, I didn’t measure :).  I just half stirred them together and started painting.

Wouldn’t this make a gorgeous vintage bathroom vanity?  I can just see it with a beautiful vessel sink and an amazing faucet.  The two narrow drawers would be perfect for make-up and brushes… and there’s a ton of space inside the center doors to house all your cleaners…  Waaah ~ I want to keep it.

I love all the details in this buffet!
The craftsmanship of these old pieces blows me away and the feet are awesome!

I wonder what they were thinking when they designed furniture way back when?

I really do love these colors together.  How can you go wrong with this combo?

I love working with chalk & clay paints.  So much so that I now retail the paints that we use.  Ready to Shizzle it?  We offer a complete line of chalk & clay paints, waxes, glazes, clear coats, metallic mica powders and the best chalk & clay paint brushes on the market.  Take advantage of our sales now on our Online Shizzle Shop here.

Want to Know my Paint Layering Secrets?

Hey everyone, howzit?  I’m so excited to be guest posting today for my good friend Karen at Redoux in San Francisco!  She is one of the neatest people I’ve ever met.  She’s spunky, sweet, witty, super upbeat and man is she  f u n n y !!!  I just love her to pieces!!

Karen is one talented designer!  She paints up a storm, transforming old furniture and kitchen cabinets like nobody’s business.  She’s also the luckiest person on earth.  You just wouldn’t believe the things this girl scores curbside.  It never ends.  Seriously!!  She finds the coolest things – all-the-time!

Karen just transformed a dilapidated old pine dresser into something you’d swear came from a high end furniture boutique.  This dresser should be on the cover of a major design magazine.  It’s that cool!

Karen asked me to do a tutorial on how I layer CeCe Caldwell’s Paints, so I pulled out an antique buffet I’ve been saving and got to work.  It’s one of my favorite renovations to date!

Wouldn’t it make an amazing vintage bathroom vanity?

I have a garage full of projects but nothing is finished.  Since I can’t share any finished projects, I’ll give you some sneak peaks of what’s to come.
I’m really excited about the vintage buffet I’m working on.  I’d love to keep it here and use it for our bathroom vanity, but that would take a small miracle ~ I can’t even clear the dining room table.  How am I going to renovate the bathroom?  It would make a really cool bathroom vanity though!!  Just sayin!  I’ve painted it in Seattle Mist, Hershey Brown and Vintage White but I’ve still got a couple repairs to make and some finishing touches to  kick it up a notch:)
Sneak Peak ~ coming soon
I’m also working on a couple solutions to help me get organized with my business.  I needed storage for all my office supplies, so I refinished an old dresser in Old Ochre, Vintage White & Vermont Slate.

There’s so much more, but I’m wiped!  Stay tuned & have a GREAT weekend!!!
PS – I was getting ready to shoot pictures for tonight’s post when my camera, which has not been focusing right for the longest time, finally conked out for good.
I need a new Nikon for shooting furniture; any recommendations?
If you’d like to paint your own furniture like this, now is a great time to try because I just received a large shipment of CeCe Caldwell’s new paint colors including:  California Gold, Johnston Daffodil (a buttery yellow), Traverse City Cherry (the best red ever), Cinco Bayou Moss (rich olive green), Portland Rose (pretty pastel pink), Kentucky Mint (gorgeous mint green), Pinkerington Violet (pastel purple), Texas Prairie (warm pastel green) and Mississippi Mud (beautiful caramel color).  Check them out here or order them online here or pick it up in West Michigan at our Shizzle Design booth at Not So Shabby here.  You’ll find our display along side our painted furniture and re-purposed vintage treasures.
A hui hou! ~ Shelly

Solid Cedar Hope Chest Transformation

I love the smell of cedar.  It reminds me of our trips up to Indian River when I was a little girl.  The aroma of cedar from all the hand carved treasures filled the air in the local shops.

So when I ran across a cedar chest recently, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to breath new life back into it.  The chest was in rough shape when I found it, but I knew it would make a cool coffee table or unique wedding gift for someone so I forked out a large chunk of cash and hauled it home.

I sanded off all the scratches and marks on the top revealing the beautiful wood grain of the cedar.

Look at the difference after applying CeCe Caldwell’s Light Aging Wax (Left has been waxed, right hasn’t).  I love the richness the color gives it.

I painted the rest of it with CeCe Caldwell’s Alaskan Tundra.  This color looks amazing on furniture!  You can see the raw color of the paint after it has dried on the right.  On the left-hand side, I have started applying the wax which makes the paint look wet until the wax dries.

I wanted the finish of this to reflect a piece of the past so I feathered in light and dark aging waxes over the clear wax to give it a weathered appearance.  I also added a carved wooden embellishment as the icing on the cake.
The copper hardware had seen better days, so I gave them a little TLC.  Did I take a picture afterwards????  nooo.  Sorry, I forgot.  I’ll snap one next time I’m at the store – if I remember ~
I gave the inside a light sanding and a fresh coat of oil.
A light distressing around the edges and she was finished.
Yes those are hay bales in the background.  Does wonders for my allergies – lol!  And yes, I use my extra CeCe cans as lifts and levels while I paint – what can I say, the recycled cans are good for so many purposes.  School teachers love them!!
This chest was just dropped off to my Shizzle Design space at Not So Shabby in downtown Zeeland.  I also just received a large supply of CeCe Caldwell’s new paint colors including: California Gold, Johnston Daffodil, Traverse City Cherry, Cinco Bayou Moss, Portland Rose, Kentucky Mint, Pinkerington Violet, Texas Prairie, Mississippi Mud.  Check them out and or order them online here.
