Pickin’ The World’s Longest Yard Sale on Hwy 127

Two years ago my friends and I made a last second decision to do The World’s Longest Yard Sale.  We had a blast and with the 2016 sale right around the corner, I’m so wishing I could go again this year.

The World’s Longest Yard Sale spans 690 miles from Michigan to Alabama and includes every sort of sale you can imagine along Hwy 127.  Sales range in size from individual yard sales to ginormous flea markets with hundreds of vendors carrying everything your little heart could desire.  To see all the cool treasures we found, read on… Continue reading “Pickin’ The World’s Longest Yard Sale on Hwy 127”

Beautiful French Country Wardrobe painted with Frenchic Furniture Paint

A while back I asked for opinions on color combinations for this piece and I’m thrilled with all the votes that came rolling in.

Before Picture

Armoire - before picture

We offered different color combos to choose from ~ you voted and we painted it.

Armoire color choices A

The transformation began with two thin coats of Frenchic Furniture Paint’s beautiful Lady Grey, a rich, deep gray.  The spray gun saved a lot of time on this mammoth piece but it still took hours.  I can’t imagine hand painted the inside, outside and top of this all by hand.

10366318_1058061077570926_409879810094630509_n

After the Lady Gray, Cath sprayed Frenchic’s Posh Nelly, a beautiful light taupe

13244764_1101607266549640_8767217959639014933_n

Oh my gosh! I just noticed how much the base of this armoire dwarfs the little cabinet it’s sitting on!

Now the fun part!!  Wet Distressing!!

Shizzle Tip ~ With Frenchic Furniture Paint, you can wet distress your piece simply using a damp rag!  I love distressing furniture this way.  No Mess!  No Dust!  No damaging the wood!

12718139_1065963420114025_7861882801585637957_n

We worked on this piece as time allowed, finessing it as we went along.  Yes, we needed ladders and step stools to reach the top!  Height missed our side of the family, and I was wishing my friend Karen was here to help on several occasions ~ lol.

13315748_1104598676250499_4208946047300014713_n

I love how easy it is to wet distress Frenchic!

13315358_1104485489595151_1169289822762508834_n

Ready to see the finished piece?  Read on…

It’s one of those things where you distress a little bit, step back, look it over, do a little more ~ repeat…

13321667_1101607229882977_5827276891880750183_n

13315348_1104821952894838_5280544199558031499_n

Cathy found the perfect wire baskets for it then mounted a clothing rod above.  Did you notice the contrast in colors?  Love how the Lady Grey pops against the combo on the outside!

13339686_1105353502841683_5125258139391037795_n

Once we had achieved the look we wanted through distressing, we simply waxed it using the best dark wax ever –Frenchic’s Rustic Wax!  This dark wax pulls more a black than brown which is so rich and I can honestly say this stuff is idiot proof.  It won’t streak, leave blotches, marks…  You don’t have to cut it with mineral spirits or mix it with clear, it simply glides on as easily as if you were applying the Clear Wax.  I just can’t say enough about this stuff!

12143238_1066065890103778_6160578919294004825_n

I shot a video of myself dark waxing this piece.  It’s dorky, mind you, as I’m still recovering from surgery, but you’ll be able to tell how easy this stuff is to work with.  To watch the video, visit out ShizzleLLC Facebook Page and scroll down until you see the video.  It should show up in your left-hand column, at least that’s where it is on mine.

13319787_1105353479508352_5188057127376472885_n

We also feathered in some White Wax giving our piece even more depth and dimension.  I love how the different layers of paint and wax pops all the fabulous details of this cabinet.

12932896_1066282546748779_5920086290587857054_n

It took a couple good friends and a large trailer to move it from our workshop to our space at Not So Shabby.

13321848_1105353456175021_2170551440269137113_n

The bottom half offers a ton of storage too.

13900300_10208245159064282_3332162033855236788_n

We stored shipping blankets on one half and large, Costco-sized packages of paper towel and toilet paper on the other side.

See the two little drawers on either side?  Those are super cool too.

13900323_10208245160744324_2871615235538508146_n

I already miss having this piece in our workshop!

She’s now in our space at Not So Shabby awaiting her new venture.  Will she be filled with linens in a beautiful spa bathroom, provide amble storage for a guest room or be the focal point on a large living room wall?  The other option of course is to remove the clothing rod and shelf altogether and use it for an entertainment center.

How would you use it?

Use Textured Wallpaper to Camouflage Missing Veneer on Vintage Furniture

I found this antique bow front dresser two years ago during a trip to one of my favorite places ~ Traverse City, Michigan.

I usually  bi-pass pieces that need a lot of work and this one was definitely in need of some TLC, but I knew there was a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

I hauled it home then stashed it in our workshop for years.  Each time I thought about working on it, I dreaded removing the damaged veneer so I’d push it aside and move on to another piece.  I had it so long that I actually tried listing it for $45.  Apparently nobody else wanted to make the repairs either so I decided to dig in and salvage it.  I had just returned to work after my surgery to remove Chondrosarcoma and I was on a mission for new beginnings!

Don’t fight the Character, Embrace it!

Vintage Stereo Cabinet Re-purposed into a Wine Rack Bar using Old Town Paints Vintage White, Deep Chocolate and Metallic Mica Powders

It was love at first sight when I spotted this piece at a local thrift shop.  Just look at her fabulous detail!

IMG_0131

I could see the potential for new life but I wanted to give her some function as well since the original stereo was missing.  We took it to DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan and used it as a demo to show how much easier our chalk and clay paints are to wet distress than others on the market.

Since were one of the key speakers for the Women’s Expo at DeVos Place, we had to be on stage eight times, each time sharing our tips and techniques.

Many people, including Cathy’s eight year old grand-daughter, had their chance to try wet distressing on this stereo cabinet.

By the time we got it back to the shop, it was layered in numerous colors which looked a little too rustic for our style and the piece still had no real function.

… and then came the karate kid

One day, while his mother looked at paint, a little boy gave the intricate wooden cut-out design one swift kick with his boot ~ Guess he doesn’t like shopping for paint.  Now our antique, hand carved insert was smashed to smithereens.

Ummm…. thank you?!

The old stereo cabinet sat in our Jenison Paint Shop untouched until now.

12039764_971426496234385_2867138874276841613_n

I needed to ease back into work since I’m still in a lot of pain and this seemed like something I could do using my left hand.   Even though I can paint, sand, wet-distress, wax and buff with either hand, I didn’t realize how much I actually use both hands simultaneously either for bracing myself or the piece of furniture.  Ugh!!!

1st Painted piece of Furniture painted by me after Surgery

I chose Old Town Paint’s Vintage White and Deep Chocolate, two of my favorite, must-have, go-to colors.   I love the rich and silky feel of Old Town Paints, especially after a gentle buffing with a super fine grit sand paper or an all over wet distress.  It’s one of those crazy things, but I just can’t stop touching it.  I know, I’m weird, but there’s nothing better than a smooth as butta’ piece of painted furniture.  From the first time Cathy and I tried Old Town Paints, we were sold and there are so many beautiful colors to choose from!

We added character to the top space by adding burlap printed with vintage wine logos then added an antique, chippy door knob plate.

It’s all about the Detail!

Umm Yeah… so I got carried away with the wet distressing!

No worries, this paint is so forgiving!

I just let it dry then painted over it.  This time I took a different direction mixing some dark wax with four of my all time favorite Metallic Mica Powders ~ Bronze and Smoke from Old Town Paints along with Black and Pewter from American Paint Company.  These are my two personal favorites to mess around with.  I l mix these in with glazes, clear wax and dark wax all the time.

I painted the legs Deep Chocolate then popped the details with my custom-mixed metallic wax concoction.

I found a wine rack in another vendor’s booth at Not So Shabby and guess what?  It was just the right size, well almost.  I still needed Cathy to work her magic and build it into place.

12661853_10206874408596377_5771934381289440922_n

Since Cathy is much better at carpentry and building than I am!  Once in place, I finished painting the back and sealed the top and inside of the back with Old Town’s Paints durable and oh so easy-to-use Satin Clear Coat.  It’s another one of my favorite finishes here at Shizzle Design.

Little Red Vintage Dresser

Sharing a quick blog post on a little red dresser that I started almost a year ago.  I finally pulled it off the back burner to finish it.  I chose American Paint Company’s Firework’s Red for this antique piece using random brush strokes to build texture.

Broyhill Saga Premier Mid Century Modern Highboy & Dresser Updated in White and Java Gel Stain

Last summer, we acquired several pieces of Mid Century Modern pieces of furniture.  I have to tell you, it’s not my taste, so I was really stumped on what to do with them.  They sat in our workshop waiting for their turn and I finally decided to knock them out and get them out of our shop.

I have to be honest, it’s very difficult for me to work on pieces when I don’t like the style.  MCM is something that is usually painted a solid color so distressing was not an option.  How fun is that?   The lines are also very straight with very little detail, so it was pretty much torture for me but I plugged away and did my take on that era.

Mid Century Modern Broyhill Saga Star white paint Shizzle Design Grand Rapids Michigan chalk painted furniture

I started painting the base of the dressers in white but the original finish was leaching through turning everything orange so I stopped and gave each piece two good coats of shellac then painted them Navajo White.  The asymmetry of the drawers drove me bonkers since half had a divider and half did not so I decided to paint the drawers on the right white as well.

during

I stained the drawers with stars with rich Java stain

I primed and painted the drawer pulls with a rich metallic.

Mid Century Modern Broyhill Saga Star white paint Shizzle Design Grand Rapids Michigan chalk painted furniture stars 3

These were sealed with two coats of American Paint Company’s Top Coat.  I did four coats on the tops for added protection.  It’s so easy to apply using a sponge; my sister Cathy likes to use rags.  It’s really easy no matter how you apply it, just drippy.  Be sure to have a drop cloth underneath if you’re painting in the house.

Mid Century Modern Broyhill Saga Star highboy gentlemans chest white paint Shizzle Design Grand Rapids Michigan chalk painted furniture stars

Ironically, I had one other piece of Mid Century Modern furniture dropped off at the same time.

This little blue nightstand disappeared immediately so apparently some people really get into this era.

Peacock blue mid century modern side table painted furniture ideas chalk paint shizzle design michigan

This was painted with Peacock blue, glazed with black glaze and then sealed with American Paint Company’s Hard Coat.  I brushed my glaze on with our Viniquities paint brushes.  It does such a nice job at feathering it out and for this piece, I wanted to replicate more of a wood grain look with the glaze.

For the Hard Coat, I prefer to use a sponge or lambs wool.  I’ve been able to create beautiful finishes doing it this way.  When I try to brush it on, it dries too fast for me and I end up overworking it, then I brush over an area that’s half dry and I pull it…  So much easier and faster just to use a sponge, at least it is for me.

Kalei took both pieces to Not So Shabby on his day off where they’re eagerly waiting their new owner.

Sorry about the lame pictures.  It’s been dark and dreary and cold and stormy the past month.  So looking forward to nicer weather.

So what do you think?  Is MCM your style?

How to Add Depth & Dimension to Painted Furniture

The fact that I love creating unique finishes on my painted furniture is not a secret.  With so many people in West Michigan painting furniture, I really strive to create pieces that stand out.  I’ve never really followed the beaten path anyway.

One of the things I love American Paint Company is that their products can be used in so many different applications.  They have some of the neatest things to help DIY’ers develop There are so many fun products that my creativity is on fire.

Here’s a picture of the table before the applying the grit.

A friend of mine brought over a cool drum table she had painted and asked me to do my magic on finishing it ~ lol!  She’s too funny ~ she’s the artist.  She can paint… pictures ~ I just do the easy part.  Laurie had painted a really cool clock face on the table top and I wanted to add a little more depth to create a more vintage feel.  If you like this table, you can re-create it using: Dollar Bill, Home Plate and Gun Powder.

I lightly pounced my brush into some American Grit and then knocked off the excess by tapping on the edge of the jar.

American Grit adds another level of depth to a waxed finish.  Make sure your wax is still wet so the dust has something to grab onto.

For this table, I used American Paint Company’s Dark Wax.   It’s a great wax.  Straight out of the can, APC’s Dark Wax will change the final color of your paint so do a test area on a scrap piece of wood…

I use it straight out of the container when I’m painting with dark and highly pigmented colors.  Absolutely LOVE it!  On medium colors, I prefer to mix it with Clear Wax.  Why you ask?  I do this so I have better control over how dramatic the color change is.  The more Clear Wax added, the more sheer the antiquing will be.  Does that make sense?  I personally stick with Clear Wax when painting pastels or whites.

Laurie had already sealed it the paint with a clear coat but we noticed a few areas where the original mahogany stain had bled through the finish.  Feathering in some dark wax is a great solution to the problem.

Create this kind of dimension with American Paint Company’s Dark Wax & American Grit

I applied a thin coat of Dark Wax feathering it out so it was smooth and even then pounced on American Grit, working it in to various locations until it looked the way I wanted.

To apply American Grit, pounce it around and work it into the wax.  It’s such a fine make-up grade quality that it essentially becomes part of the wax.

I LOVE how it gets into all the texture!

Isn’t it cool how it picks up so many variations?

Pretty Pink French Provincial Highboy with video

I only caught a few shots of this little princess before she left the building.

She was already a beauty when I purchased her.  The finish had really yellowed over time and she needed a little boost.

I base coated the entire piece in American Paint Company’s Freedom Road then painted everything, except the top with Cameo, a limited edition color which has just been retired.  Cameo is a very subtle, pale pink.  I have to admit, I’m not a pastel person, but my friend kept hounding me to do this piece in that color so I finally gave in and painted the dang thing in pink just to shut her up ~ lol.

It actually is a very, pretty pink.  It’s so subtle, that most people who strolled in while I was working on it, assumed it was a vintage white.

We may still have a few pints left of Cameo.  If you’re interested; click here.

It was hot the day I painted this and the paint was drying faster than I could spread it on.  I should have watered it down more than I did but I was too busy talking.  Well if you know me; brush strokes drive me bonkers so when it came time to distress, I decided to use my sander.  I use that brush as a little feather duster when I’m sanding.  I usually wet distress, but when I do sand, I like to brush the dust away so I can see how far I’ve distressed.

One of my awesome customers asked me what I meant when I mentioned I used cross-hatched brush strokes on the top so I shot one of my quirky videos to show her.

It was so cool to hear from the gal who bought this.  She picked it up from our booth at Not So Shabby and once she got home, she contacted me to see if I could paint a twin size bed to coordinate with it.  She said there is no hurry since her little princess is only 4 months old 🙂

Looking forward to finding the perfect bed to match!
